Default part 141 instrument question

it seems hard to get a straight definite answer.
the jeppesen syllabus says 35 hours of training to obtain your instrument add on. the 35 hours of training, is this total training in the airplane, or total number of simulated/actual instrument hours ?

14 CFR 141 Appendix C, subpart (4)(b), available at www.faa.gov, will tell you the minimum answer but the specific answer depends on the particular school's FAA approved syllabus.

Oh, I hated it when CFI's didn't understand this, or when they were trying to pad their own logbooks by "misreading" this. I left a Part 141 school because of this!!!

Basically, it depends on the schools TCO. For most, it will spell out 35 hours of training. Not all of that will be Sim Instrument - some will be taxiing, some will be hood, some will be XC, etc, etc.

It's all in the TCO. If the TCO doens't spell it out, don't read extra regulations into it. The thinking has already been done.

To answer the original question, the FAA approved syllabus for the 141 school will typically allow no more than half of those hours to be in a flight training device ("simulator"). For example, ours calls for 37 hours, no more than 18 of which can be done in the FTD.
