Can you sign someone off on a BFR if they don't have a current medical?

Yes, I think it depends on if you are PIC for the flight portion though. If they are not within their 24 months, I think that makes you a required flight crewmember, as they are not allowed to fly solo. So you would need a valid 3rd class medical, right?

If you are a flight instructor who doesn't hold a medical, you can give a BFR to a pilot as long as his medical and previous BFR hasn't expired.

Good catch, I also read the question inncorrectly with my apologies. In this question the pilot who needs a BFR has an expired medical. The instructor must have a medical because you can only act as PIC if you have a valid medical. Since neither party has a valid medical, neither can be PIC. |

I'm pretty sure you can still do it, because you as the flight instructor would just need to be acting as PIC. You can still give them a BFR. It doesn't make mention that a medical is required, or that the pilot taking it needs to be PIC. Technically, the person who is receiving the BFR isn't really exercising the privlidges of his/her certificate. They are receiving dual given from you, the legal PIC.

This is an excellent question. I am going to look up the answer myself from the FARs. Can a flight instructor who doesn't hold a valid medical give a BFR to a pilot who is still BFR current, but doesn't have a valid medical? The tangled web we weave. |
