We are officially starting our 2 Day Tailwheel Transition Course. The cost is $1,400.00 for 6 hours of flight instruction and all ground instruction.

Looks a little steep on the price though with an average of $233.00/hr. I would say normally an hour or so of ground in the beginning to explain how the little wheel wants to end up in front of the big wheel and then after the first flight a debrief to explain that those pedals up front arent foot rest and the rest is mostly flying.

Not sure what the overall investment was in the super cub or your operating cost but the fun factor should be high. The super cub is a fun plane to fly.

The problem with a tailwheel aircraft is insurance. If that was a normal price, we could lower the per hour cost. But man do they get you once you say "yeah, tailwheel instruction...."

Hmmm, I hadn't seen this before...I'll have to think about tacking this on during my April-May training with you. Very tempting.

Old reply because I just saw it but...Michael,Thanks for the reply as to the tailwheel insurance directly influencing the cost of rental. Something I did not think of which obviously makes sense. The two places which I have taught tailwheel have both been flying tailwheels for over 40 years so they have established themselves with the companies which represent them and I am sure get a bit of a cut on the price as opposed to you guys starting out with the super cub.

That's the idea...plus imagine the landing areas it would open up! Check out this out to see what I mean, http://shaunlunt.typepad.com/shootings/

Athough I've lived up here a few decades, I'm new to the aviation biz. Looks to me like float ratings are in hotter demand up here than TW. Maybe some of the AK members who know better can chime in.

$1400 seems real steep for a tw to me! I got mine for about $700 it seems like. And that was with the ground instruction. It was in a Taylorcraft with an O-200. I would say more people use a tw than a float rating up here. Largely because floats are seasonal. Tw is year-round. Also, float insurance is spendy like tw is (many people I know just go without).

It might be a little easier and cheaper to get a TW endorsement up in Alaska then down here in Kansas. I think the insurance companies understand that there NEEDS to be TW instruction in Alaska. It is hard to convince them that we need to provide it here. Hence, the large disparity in insurance and price.

I don't think that insurance differs like that. If anything its probably more expensive. Also, have you checked the price of gas up here? Its 6 bucks a gallon where I am right now. Gas in Anchorage is about $4/gal. I think it peeked at about $5/gal in Anchorage during the summer, and about $7/gal in the smaller more remote towns for avgas. I don't know how much having tw will help you in getting a job up here. Most commercial operations don't run tw aircraft, and the ones who do have experienced pilots. TW time definitely wont hurt your chances, and its some of the most fun flying you can do (hard to decide b/t tw and floats). Either way, I would always recommend getting a tw. It teaches you to think on your feet (pun intended)

100LL is STILL 5.90/gallon in Valdez after hovering around 7 the last 12 months. For those of you not familiar with our state, the airport is 4nm from the pipeline terminal that exports 20% of our nation's domestic crude. This just doesn't seem right. Why don't we just divert, say 1% of that flow for in state refining only? Why do we have to send all of it to the lower 48 for refining? Disclaimer, I don't know all that much about the AK refining infrastructure, just spouting off here, but I do know that there have been several state commissions inquiring into price fixing for fuels.

Back to the point, there are lots of TW machines up here, and in my area, PWS, just as many float operators. AK drifter I think you nailed the salient point which is, how many of them are comm? I guess I haven't seen too many...the Klaus family with that superb TW Turbo Otter really stick out in my mind though. That thing is amazing.

Definitely a rating I am eager to grab at some point though!
