ATC & Police

For all of the active ATCs....what is the likelyhood of me and my husband being able to balance our schedules with me being an ATC and him being a cop? We have a young daughter and I was wondering how flexible the ATC world is with regards to both parents being in a 24 hour job. Would I be able to get a set schedule, because of this reason, or would I have to be in the rotating schedule. I know each place with be different, but I just wanted to see what kind of responses I would get. Thanks!!

Imagine how popular you would be coming freshly new into the Facility and trying to get a set schedule, when people who have been there 20+ years are still on rotating scheds. with crappy days off. I know each place with be different, but I just wanted to see what kind of responses I would get. Thanks!!

As a trainee it will be tough. Trainee's are generally assigned a schedule and they have little to zero say on it. Once certified you'll be at the bottom of the seniority list so you won't have a lot of schedule choices when you bid. You will be able to shift swap with other people so that would help work things out.

ATLTRACON said it all.

-I know someone who is eligable to retire in a couple years and is still at the bottom of senority list with no pull on getting good days off.

-If you get hired soon, you should be at the top of the senority list in 10 years or so but you'll still have rotating shifts.

I'm in training at OKC and a seasoned former ATC mentioned how hard it is on family life and also mentioned you'll probably get divorced and it will be because of your job. I'm trying to take it with a grain a salt even though i've heard this before. Just something to think about.
