Question ATC career -- help!

Hello, I'm a Senior in High School, I'm currently training towards my Private Pilots License. I Love airplanes and for sometime now I've been planning on going to a local community college and getting generals done, then transferring to a different college which has excellent training for A.T.C..

I'm wondering what it takes to get into this career, I hear its very stressful, yadda-yadda, but I am one who deals with stress very well and not worried about that.

What do I need for this career? Where should I go, what should I do, what does it take?

Also, I have a past of O.C.D. when I was a child (I no longer have it, and am not on any medication for it at this time, though I was on medication when I was a child) will I have any chance of getting a job?

What kind of Medical cert. do I need for A.C.T.?

Thanks, and sorry for badgering on and on! Just trying to work some stuff out!!

Beehive, have you received your final offer, yet? Were you in Miami for the PEPC? I know of 2 guys, when I was there, that were going to the Salt Lake City center. Are you going to the center or the tower?

I'm doing all the pre-employment here in Utah and i'm waiting for a tentative from Salt Lake City TRACON. The TRACON is located below the tower but it is a TRACON only facility.

Have you received your final offer or OKC date?

Still waiting on my final offer, as well. It looks like security just started on my investigation, yesterday; my references/employers/friends got their letters last night. I don't know how long it takes, from this point, but I'm hoping to hear something by the end of this month. I have a lot of planning that I need to do, and am pretty much at a standstill, until I get a class date. We have to find renters for our home, we have to find a home to rent in Iowa, I have to find somewhere to rent while in OKC, my husband needs to find a job in Iowa. I am normally a planner, to the T, and the anxiety of all of the unknowns is killing me right now!

Hey AJ,

Do you know if security contacts your current employer during the check? I mean, I really don't want my current employer to know I'm looking into another job. How many people do they talk to? Is it all people you recommend to them or do they find others from your past to talk to w/o your knowledge?

Yes, they will contact your current employer, and I don't think that you can elect for them not to do so. They only contact individuals (mostly by mail) whom you put on your SF86, which ends up being a whole lot of people, at least it was for me. You have to supply neighbors or someone to attest to where you were living for the last 10 years, at every address that you lived. I utilized landlords, property management companies, and neighbors for this part. Then you must supply people who have known you, at each of your places of employment and schools, for the last 7 years. Finally, you're required to provide 3 references. If you do a google search under SF86, you should be able to find the form that you'll be required to complete. I know of other people who are running into problems, with their current employers, due to not notifying them prior to them receiving government paperwork (from the security investigation). I ended up just letting my boss know, from the very beginning, so that she would understand when I requested time off to take the AT-SAT, attend the PEPC, and later on to make preperations for moving out of state and attending the academy. Good luck.

Looks like you got your work cut out for you. I hope all goes well and you hear something soon.
It was a huge releif to here SLC had chose me, I have a lot of family in SLC area that have offered me, wife and kids a place to stay until I get money rolling in.
I have a good paying job right now (Wendy's drive-thru $22.93/hr) so it doesn't bother me if I have to wait on OKC but the sooner the better.

Keep posting so we know how everything goes.
