Default Dress attire and facial hair?

Just wondering what is expected at work? What type of clothes are you suppose to wear while working? Also are beards allowed?

FAA says "business casual" but, the individual facilities can't seem to come up with what is business casual. Soooooo, you get a lot of subjectiveness and they will send you home from work ( using your annual leave) if they don't like what you are wearing. Have had people sent home because of the color of clothing Manglements comments were that it was not a "manly color"...socks not the right "length". Of course you have to remember that their reasoning for imposing a dress code was that when we wore shorts and polo shirts we "eroded the publics confidence in us to do our job".
  1. The "public" is not allowed anywhere near where I work
  2. If, for some incredible reason, you did get into the facility you may be given a tour by someone from the front office that was wearing *gasp* jeans. In the TRACON airways facilities has one of their main operating areas where they wear jeans, shorts, baseball hats, etc. Hope your confidence in the monitoring and maintaining of the NAS is not eroded.
  3. It was nothing more than a power issue.
Yes you can have a beard, but there were questions during their manglements Kool-Aid fest contract imposing meetings w/ stupervisors two years ago about making us have NO facial hair what-so-ever.

Three quick ways for THEM to stop the tide of retirements.
  • NEGOTIATE (not Force) a contract with the controllers
  • Treat us like the skill adults that we are...not children
  • return us to the old contract while we negotiate the new one.
It is not widely known that on average this year 6.2 controllers are retiring system wide. The highest in the history of US ATC. Keep your eyes wide open and your TCAS's armed...we're tired.

Off of the soapbox now.
