I'm taking this semester off school to get my pilot's license. I have 3 semesters left for an Econ degree at UC Berkeley. The deadline to register for Fall is coming up quick! Any suggestions on what I should do?
Career more important? or degree important?
BTW, I've already got a decent job (unionized train conductor), so I'd take a severe pay-cut to work for the FAA
-Patrick | Do you work for the UPRR, as a conductor? If so, you're already making more than most controllers. My dad works for the UPRR and conductors earn anywhere from $40,000 start to $75,000 after several years. At the little level 5 tower that I'm going to, I will only be making $43,000 after checking out, and I'm having to transfer halfway across the country to work there! You may be better off, with your degree and your railroad experience, attempting to get hired as a train dispatcher. The money is better, and I would imagine that it would be a whole heck of a lot less stress. Thats just my $.02. |

Yah, those earnings are about right (actually there are people at my work who break six figures, but they work like crazy to do that). I already have four years into it, so perhaps it's unwise to throw that away. Hmm, yah there was a conductor I knew who became a train dispatcher. Good suggestion, although I'm not sure I want to sit at a desk/computer for the rest of my career (which atc may be similar, but at least at a tower you can watch the planes you control).
Wow, only 43k after checking out? Maybe the next presidential administration will give you guys a super-raise to the old pay-scale? (cross your fingers) |

| Re: ATSAT Scores Hi, I scored 97.3 !!!!!!!!!!!
I have been trying to get a answer to this question from the FAA and I still do not know how it works. So if any one can fill me in that would be awesome.
I was asked to Interview for Cleveland. I have another application on file for "throughout the nation." If I go to the PEPC and get a tenative job offer for Cleveland can I still be placed on the referral list and interview for Detroit (providing I am selected). I do not want to move. I will if I have to.
Does anyone know the answer ?????

| Re: ATSAT Scores I am pretty smart and studied with the more than helpful ATC careers book. I drove 8 hours to do the test in ok city on the 4th of april. Ended up getting a 97.2 did pretty good. Crashed a couple planes, but did extremely good on the letter factory. |

Does anyone know the answer ????? | Once you agree to an interview (PEPC) you are no longer considered for any other states. You can go to a PEPC to get your administrative work out of the way and then decline the tenative offer letter and then you will go back into the pool for other states. However, I'm consistently hearing that declining an offer is a very risky move and is not viewed as a positive thing from the FAA. Many people are saying to just get in and wait a year until you get checked out and then transfer. Although, transferring from a lvl 12 like Cleveland would be hard. It is easier to move up in facility lvl than to move down.

Just because someone got a "100" on their test and you didnt doesnt mean that they will get selected for an interview, or even pass all the parts of the interview including the physical and security clearance.
My advice is to just kick back a cold one and enjoy the waiting game like all the other FEB. applicants. |

| Re: ATSAT Scores To the best of my knowledge, no one with a passing score has ever been turned done based solely on their lower AT-SAT.
The test used to be used to determine if you were going to a center or terminal, but that went out the window a year or two ago. Now, people with 75% are regularly going to level 12 terminals and centers, and people with 100% are ending up at level 5 VFR towers.
At this point, the AT-SAT is basically pass/fail. If you get any sort of passing grade then congratulations!, now all you have to do is pass the security & medical, wait months and months and months, and you'll be in.
Seriously, the FAA is desperate for people. They're not going to be turning anyone even remotely qualified away. |

Seriously, the FAA is desperate for people. They're not going to be turning anyone even remotely qualified away. | You know, I have no clue who or what to believe anymore. My step father and my father (both were/are controllers) tell me that the FAA is completely under staffed and most controllers moving up level 9 to 12 facilities will actually retire within the next 3 years. Hell, my father even wrote a book about it ( www.bobrichardsbooks.com).
On the other hand, I read these forums and it confuses me. Logically, why put a score band up? Also, since there are an abundence of CTI grads and over 4,000k OTS (That stat was taken from this site) that took the ATSAT and are "well qualified", it seems pointless to hold onto the "qualified" candidates with no aviation backround.
NOTE TO MILITARY CONTROLLERS!
To be honest with you, I did particularly very ASVAB a while back and made qualification score for the ATC position. Since I have a degree in computer science, I went to an officer training recruiter and told me I need to enlist since I have no aviation backround. Is he lieing to me?
Also, what are my chance of getting the job through MEPS? |
