Default Military to Civilian transition

I am writing on behalf of my husband. He is currently active duty in the Air Force working as an air traffic controller but his seperation date is quickly approaching (May!). As of right now we have applications out to quite a few FAA locations for announcements that closed on Jan 31,2008, as well as a few applications for DoD through usajobs and one paper application to a DoD slot in Utah that closed in mid January
He works with a couple of DoD guys who are trying to assist him but they have both been in for a while and don't know the procedures very well. How quickly might we expect the process to go for a seperating military controller? Will he need to take the AT-SAT? Will claiming VRA and/or VEOA really increase his chances of being hired?
I appreciate any guidance that you can give us!! Right now our fingers and toes are crossed that he will be selected for the DoD job in Utah but we haven't even received word yet if he is one of the best qualified candidates.

After seeing numerous VRA (military) controller come, and go, from our facility in the last year+ and then seeing them go to the DOD for 2-3X's there FAA salary I would recommend the DOD. It seems they are hiring AND paying very well. I would not join the FFA in the current environment.

Absolutely; VRA and any disability points will greatly enhance your husband's selection process.

Have a friend that gave me a heads up about a DOD job, but I missed the announcement.

I had a phone interview with the FAA 2 weeks ago (I am working in Kosovo as contract ATC), heard through the grapevine (family friend) that they are goign to offer me the job. So now I am waiting to see if that is true or not...not holding my breath.
