Are pencils and scratch paper allowed during testing?

No- pencil, pen, paper, calculator, watch-calculators, cellphone, pager.
Just you, the computer, keyboard and mouse. A watch is a great idea unless it has a calculator. A drink is allowed, keep it on the ground next to you.
Math is the first sub-test which is 25 questions. You will have about 5 practice questions. Don't stress it! It will be a blasty blast!

They give you 8 hours but it is kind of at your own pace. Each section is timed but you can take breaks and really take as long as you want as long as you give yourself enough time to finish.

When I took it I think we started at 8:30 am. They read some instructions and away you go. Of the 8 or so people who were there when i took it I was the last to finish a little after 2pm. I took a 30 min lunch break is about all. But definitely go at your own pace. I was pretty surprised that everyone booked before me, of course, who knows how well they did.

I ran into one of the other test takers at dinner that night. It took him the full 8 hours. Found out later through e-mail that he got a 73%.....

So.... Study Study Study.

Ya, study what? I took the test and thought afterwards that the only possible thing that would of helped me would of been finding the exact same letter factory game and ATC scenario program.

There is a book titled "Air Traffic Control Career Prep" by Patrick Mattson available on Amazon and other bookstore chains. It also includes a CD with practice exercises you will encounter on the actual AT-SAT.

Those sample tests are not exactly identical to the AT-SAT, but rather they give you a good idea of what to expect. If you do use the CD to prepare, make sure that you still take the time to read through the directions on the actual AT-SAT. I found a few discrepancies between the instructions in the CD and the actual test.

Good luck!

I studied some math and some basic stuff just to freshen up from years of Trig..lol.

Other than that, for all you new ATSAT takers, I'm working on creating a study guide to help you get ready... along with a working version of the Letter Factory... but that all depends on how much spare time I have

That is awesome how you are working on that. Once you do finish it you'll have to make sure you post it!!!

No need to study, if you have you have it. The vast majority never studied.

No offense swim, but are you sure about those times? Letter factory and the ATC sim are 45 min each with both of those how did you finish in 1.5 hours?

Yeah, I'm with polar bear on this one. Don't expect it to possibly take only 1.5 hours. Although you can 'go at your own pace' there are parts of the test that have timed sections, like PB mentioned. I mean maybe if you didn't read any of the questions and just put any old answers down.

I didn't do any studying really, although I did use the test as an excuse to buy a Nintendo DS and play brain age and Flash focus a lot before I took it.

I'm studying using the Patrick Mattson book and CD. I have found the letter factory to be allright, but everytime I practice with it the computer will send down like 3 A's of the same color and also do the same type of stuff with other colors/letters. I think it is almost impossible to do everything right. Did anyone find this same problem on the test or is it more reasonable? Anyone use the practice CD and take the test? What were the differences (did the program act the same way?), besides some minor rules that I have already heard about?

I thought that the actual test was a lot easier than the practice CD-ROM. The letter factory was fairly different but they gave you instructions and a few practices before the scored part of the test began. The Air Traffic Scenarios were also easier and the scan test was about the same.

The test is really much easier than the practice in the book and on the CD. The rules are similar if not the same which is good because you know what each section expects. I found the SCAN test to be easier because your able to catch a lot more of them on the test. The AT scenarios is also easier because it does actually update every 7 seconds like it is suppose to and the CD does not. The CD has the planes moving much faster and constant. The letter factory on the test does not do what the CD does it gives you only letters you can place but I will caution that there are some other rules to the letter factory on the test.

All this being said I feel the book really helped me to prepare and I figure if you can do it when it is harder you should have it if it is easier on the test. I scored a 92.5 and I attribute some of that to knowing what was expected of me before I went and took the test.

It is an aptitude test though so a lot of it you either have or you don't. I hoped this helped and GOOD LUCK.

Way to go SwimAway! I'll drink to that, hell i'm drinking anyways. And to think, I took all the breaks, finished in six hours and I still just scored the same as you. I'll get you Swim, i'll get you!!!
You can't knock hard work. Props SwimAway.

To everyone else, who you got in the Super Biz'ole? Giants vs. Patriots(-12). I'm on the Patriots band wagon. FYI: I only have a couple bucks left in my account. Rough season to say the least.

Hi Swim,

I was just wondering if you ever made this. Or if anyone else has found a Letter Factory other than the one on the CD. It's fun, but has a few glitches. It shuts down before I can see how I did, and it seems impossible to not drop letters. But whatever, it is helpful.

Do you think that helped you at all?

I might get one, but I have a PSP already.

But if I can write it off as a study aid....

Does anybody think that TIME plays into the test scores? I've just noticed that everyone who was done quickly that I've talked to has a higher score. I was the 1st done out of ~15 in the room I was in and got a 100. My scenarios were not nearly perfect though, as I had one crash, and on the long 1500 second one, I was landing airplanes the wrong way half the scenario.

One can only guess how the test is scored and what type of weight is given to each section. When I took the test back in the April I was the last to finish around 13:30 (took many breaks, left the hotel for lunch, etc). I would guess that time is only a factor when you run out of it on an individual section, I doubt they care if some one can finish the entire test in 2 hours vs 5

No. They tell you multiple times that you can "go at your own pace".

Well, I took them at their word-- heck I drove 5 hours to take the test, so I wanted to take my time. Took all my breaks, little over an hour lunch, and was one of the last to finish. I ended up with a 95, which was better than I expected after I completely bombed the analogies.
