| Hello When a pilot is cleared "DIRECT TO BANGOR" and the airport is named the same as the VOR, what is ATC clearing you to? Thank you |

that could depend on
if teh wx is VFR and if you are cleared direct to the airport, you should hear 'cleared direct to the bgr airport......' or something similar.

| Old Skool | Good question, it was asked to me on my CFII ride. The answer the DE was looking for, and I gave him, is to ask for clarification.

Lets say you are a jet and landing KBGR ... your route is PUT.J581.ENE..KBGR In this scenario say prior to PUT you are cleared direct Bangor, you are cleared to the airport. The VOR is not in your flight plan so you would not be cleared to the VOR. In another scenario you're flying ENE.V93.BGR..KBGR In that scenario prior to ENE you are issued direct Bangor then in my opinion your are cleared to the VOR, the first Bangor on your flight plan. Obviously if you are /A then you can only proceed to the VOR. | |

| Old Skool | Do you by chance live near BGR? Welcome to JC. The VOR here is about 2.5 miles north of the field. Never hurts to ask for clarification, but I would assume for enroute IFR traffic (especially where the VOR was part of the filed route) that the VOR wuld be the place to be. If you are /A or /U IFR, you would obviously be going to the VOR. As VFR traffic in the terminal area, do whatever you want. Thats my background from flying /A and /U airplanes and a whole bunch of VFR.

DE was wrong, go figure heh, as FoxXray said, if the VOR is in your filed flight plan, go to the VOR if not go to the airport. Of course, if there is any doubt, ask.

Yeah I should have prefaced my post by saying, not sure if this is right but... I figured if you ask for clarification it reduces yourself to risk. I think the DE was making sure if I wasn't sure on something I would ask rather than do something I assume is right. By the way this ATC forum rocks, I've learned A TON on here. Merry Christmas!

| We were cleared the other day direct to Fargo and we filed the Victor but we were cleared from present position (probably 10 miles north of the victor), so we verified and we cleared direct to the airport even though that is not what we filed nor what they said
