Default Question

I have a question that may seem a bit dumb, but here goes anyway. I was just reading how the Pentagon is allowing commercial flights in the previously restricted east coast corridor to alleviate congestion over the holidays. In the same article, it talked about how Bush is pushing for new GPS guided ATC to replace radar, and that got me thinking about a few things.

Is the plan to completely eliminate radar and to solely use GPS? And if so, then what happens if, for example, we have a massive solar flare and the GPS goes down? Would radar then become the back up system?

As for Bush opening up airspace, that isn't going to help the situation of still having the same amount of runways. The airplanes are still going to be lined up on the taxiways waiting to takeoff and only one plane at a time can land!! That situation remains the same no matter how much "new" airspace is given. It's just another one of those things that fools the public into thinking things are going to get better.

As for the GPS system I'm not sure what will happen. The NextGen they talk about hasn't really been developed from what I heard and will take years and years to actually be integrated (sp?) into the current system.

Everyone is all worried about what happens if GPS goes down. Well what happens now if radar goes down, we don't have a backup for that.
