You're right about asking for the intersection departure, but at the same time, the controller may initiate the intersection departure by him/her self if they wanted to. Having you taxi back to full length may be a directive from the management. In my case, the county does not authorize "midfield departures" so we cannot solicit nor approve such requests (the runway is 3995').

Also, not knowing what type of aircraft had departed prior to you, it may be even quicker to taxi to full length to avoid wake turb (BobDDuck).
Be it a sm+ or a large they could get you right out rather than having to hold you downfield for 3 min.

c. Intersection departures may be initiated by a controller or a controller may authorize an intersection departure if a pilot requests.
