Default Instrument Practice Approaches

Quick question....is a transponder code and permission required to perform a VFR practice approach into a uncontrolled airport?

Quick Answer. NO

It is pretty common just advise of CTAF what you are doing and you will be in good shape.

Yup, the correct answer is No.

Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to monitor the appropriate approach frequency for the airport.

But I'm sure you do that already.

Here at IWA in the PHX area it's pretty much required. Technically, it's not, but there's so much traffic shooting practice approaches that if you tried to do it without contacting Phoenix approach, you'd either hit someone or make approach control and the other pilots pretty upset. Late at night when the traffic is super light, you can pretty much just fly the approach and contact tower or CTAF, whichever is appropriate at the time.

Edit: Just now noticed that you said uncontrolled airport... haha, oh well..

The very first time I got a "we have a number for you to call" was doing just that at Williams. Turns out they don't like it when you call up 6 miles out on the 30 Finals.

I agree....in controlled airspace I'd always talk to Approach. There are a few uncontrolled airports that are pretty dead, not much traffic. If I forget to cancel in the air, usually I have 5 mins to call them when on the ground.
