Default B-Plan pay... ?

Just doing some researching for a class (and myself) and I've been reading posts on here about the new non-tract pay. I was also reading the FAA's 2007 hiring plan and ran across some interesting stuff.

One quote was, "provides new hires with a very competitive, average annual cash compensation of $94,000 after five years on the job."

Just wanted to get the other side's opinion on that as it still sounds damn good to people like me eyeballing it from the outside.

I'm looking to the future right now as I just got approved for retraining into ATC with the Air Force. I'm currently a crew chief on C-17s. Just weighing the FAA vs. AF option since they are still handing out huge bonuses (about $10-12k per year) to AF controllers. I figgure I could be making in around $60-70k in the AF with the bonuses and be within 4 years of a retirement here. OR jump to the FAA after my first couple years and see how that goes.

I respect your opinion

Well, it's up to you.

I didn't want to do ATC for the military. But on a purely compensation and benefits side of things. . .you'll be better off long term if you stay in, and do atc for the air force than jump ship to the FAA.

The 94k, includes base pay, and the FAA's determined monetary value of health, dental, and vision benefits. So in reality, depending on your facility, your base (and take home to be honest) pay is going to be much less.

5 years on the job, from a level 5 to level 12 facility (know though that the FAA is planning to restructure all facility ratings to essentially get rid of level 10 and higher facilities. . .hence, reducing employee pay further [another attempt by the FAA to reduce compensation of their employees]) could yield a 40-65K a year paycheck.

That 40-65k figure is just an initial response. I'll try to find the B-plan pay rates.

Know though, that even at 5 years with the FAA, if you goto a center (ARTCC), you'll still be on developmental pay only making 30-45k until you become a FULL CPC.

SVTcobra281,

Congrats on getting approved for retaining into ATC. You'll love Keesler!

As far as the bonus goes, you can easily max out the reenlistment bonus at $60k. You probably know how it works already, but for those of you that don't know, you get half up front, $30k, and then annual installments each year there after.

Also, when you become a watch supervisor you'll get special duty pay. I'm sure it doesn't compare to your flight pay, but it's better than nothing at all.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Let us know how school goes!
