Default ATC CTI

Does one have to go through the CTI program to be considered for an ATC position, or is there another way to do it. I see on the FAA job site, that there are postings and the requirements are progressive work experience or a 4yr degree. Am I missing something?

They are hiring off the street. A number of people going through the Academy now are OTS people. I don't know how you do it... I guess just apply to any of the open positions online and then take your ATSATs.

The off the street hires of last year were from Job fairs in ABQ and OAK, as well as a couple from MEM from 2004 / early 2005.

Keep an eye open for job fair postings at www.atccti.com's forums.

The two main ways the FAA has been hiring has been via CTI and VRA. They have hired some "off the street" via job fairs. These job fairs are generally for geographic area that are hard to staff. The FAA will hold an event where you can submit your resume and speak to some FAA types, then a random drawing is done base don your SS#, if your number comes up then you are offered to take the ATSAT test for placement. Keep in mind that unlike CTI and VRA where you can hired into any facility these are generally very specific where they send you... and they tend to be the hardest facilities.

Where I work we have received about 10 off the street hires and they are not fairing well... none have yet to certify and I think 3 have already been terminated. It is a very steep learning curve to get hired with zero aviation experience and get thrown to the wolves at a busy level 12 facility.

Fox, thanks for the info. The reason I asked was because I went on the FAA website and was browsing the jobs section, I saw for two positions they were hiring from "all sources" its was for BOS or something like that, the requirements were either a 4yr Bachelors or 3yrs of progressively responsible work experience. My question is if I apply and take the ATSAT and do well on it, is that all I'd have to do to get into OKC?

It's my understanding that the ATSAT for CTI students is pass/fail. For everyone else it is graded with 70 being passing.

When looking on the FAA website only jobs with codes 2152 are Air Traffic.

The last digit of your ssn needs to match the number they are looking for in the group of people from the job fair. At least that is the rumor going around, in one class all the OTS's figured out they had the same last digit in their ssn...
Im taking the CTI classes now, I know enough already that I would be bored or miserable doing the job...
