| Do I need to inform ATC (or clearance delivery) of my intended route of flight when requesting VFR advisory? I've been told before that I only need to inform them of my destination and requested altitude, but should I also give them route of flight like in an IFR clearance? Thanks! |

| Not really, as long as you're meandering in roughly the right direction. If your course appears to them remarkably strange, they may ask "where are you going?"

| LA ARTCC often replies "say route to _______"

| The answers are really good ... most of the time A/C are proceeding direct but if you are say following a coast line or following a highway to navigate I would advise ATC. When we ask it is usually so we can project what airspace you will be flying through and what we need to enter into the computer so flight info gets passed to the sectors you will transition. |

| Thanks a lot guys - I appreciate the advice - I usually let them know when I'm following the coast, but it's good to know that if they need the info, they'll ask. Thanks! |

| Air Traffic Controller | From a VFR TWR perspective only.... Keep in mind if you volunteer your transition or routing info (with altitude) to the controller it is just as helpful. Freeways and highways are great for giving the controller an idea of where you're headed!
