What am I missing here?

Take it easy on me I should know this but I haven't had my private long. I was enroute today to a small non towered field right beside some class C airspace. I contacted the approach controller 30 miles out or so just to get traffic advisories yada yada. After she said radar contact she said contact me 120.10 so I asknowledged and did that. On that frequency she said 570 contact cessna 7k4 (don't remember the exact tail number) on the approach frequency I was previously on. So I switched back over and tried to contact this aircraft twice, to which it never answered. I was just wondering what the purpose of me trying to contact another aircraft while on the approach frequency? I would think if I was close to traffic she would say traffic 9oclock 3miles whatever, I didnt really follow as to what the purpose of me contacting this aircraft was. If I would have made contact what would I have said back, the tower just wanted me to contact you, where you eating lunch?

Usually that means the controller can't hear the other aircraft talking and would like you to attempt to contact the other aircraft and relay instructions from ATC to the other aircraft. You'll hear it happen now and again and sometimes you'll be able to hear an airplane attempting to contact approach, but approach doesn't respond. If you're comfortable doing it, you can let approach know that there is someone attempting to contact them without a response and relay a frequency change that might work better for the other aircraft or another message. You'll never contact another aircraft to talk about each other's position. That's ATC's job in a radar environment as their workload permits.

Just remember when you're out by yourself it's a good idea to listen to the frequency and you'll probably learn something almost every time. I know I have with my current job. You'll also hear some bad and idiotic things too. Pretty much every flight you'll probably pick up something you didn't know before. That's part of the fun for me anyway.

usually they tell you why. 'jetlink, go to 132.45 and see if you can find piper 1234H tell him to call cleveland on 119.62", etc.

i had center ask me to call an aircraft on guard one day, that caught me by surprise
