| I was in Jackson Hole (JAC) over the weekend--About 6500' elevation. The controller stated the temp (18 C) on ATIS followed by "check density altitude." I know why controllers say it, but when is it required to be stated?

I believe when the official WX advisory the ATC folks receive contains a density altitude advisory, then they include it, along with all other pertinent info in that report. Items such as wind direction/speed and altimeter can be read from the instruments in the tower. ATIS gets interesting when you get the "remarks; warning, RPG and small arms/automatic weapons fire in progress on 5 mile to 2 mile final for runway 32. High TRP recoveries in progress...Low TRP not recommended."

| An advisory to check density altitude is issued to departing GA aircraft at airports with field elevations of 2000' MSL and above based on the following: Field Elevations (MSL) Broadcast Advisory When Temperature is 2,000 to 2,999 85°F and higher 3,000 to 3,999 80°F and higher 4,000 to 4,999 75°F and higher 5,000 to 5,999 70°F and higher 6,000 to 6,999 65°F and higher 7,000 and higher 60°F and higher |
