Default FAA Medical question

Hello all,

I have been working on sifting through the FAA's website looking for some answers to questions, and I've given up and just decided to post on here for some advice. I just got a first class medical/student pilot cert. today. When I get my private, comm. etc, does that medical stay the same, or do I end up having to reapply for different forms, etc? I was wondering because of the student pilot thing on there if there is a different medical once you aren't a student pilot anymore. I realize the actual medical remains active, but is there any additional paperwork needing filed etc. Anyone with a quick answer is appreciated. Thanks again!

Mark

Edit: I realized what you're asking about LOL Sorry!
Even if you get a new certificate, your medical is still good. That is unless you want to engage in commercial operations. You can get a Commercial certificate with only a Third Class Medical, but to actually fly commercially, you would need the Second Class.

Im coming up on my first solo flight, in which I need to get a medical. When I go will it be specific on a 3rd class only? Or say your in great health would a 1st class medical be given? I guess my question is how do the medicals work when you get them?

Since you were issued First Class, you'll have a First Class Medical if you solo within 6 calendar months of the examination, Second Class if you solo 6-12 calendar months after the date of examination and Third Class afterwards. But don't worry since for getting a certificate all you need is Third Class so it really won't matter for your case.

You apply for the Medical you want. If you are going to be a private pilot you can apply for a 3rd class. But if you want to be a commercial pilot eventually it wouldn't be a bad idea to apply for a 1st class just to be sure you can earn one.

The class of medical doesn't change depending on the month. What changes are the privileges they are good for. You don't automatically lose your first class health after 6 calender months, you lose the ability to exercise ATP privileges. Your first class medical will be good for 36 calendar months, but you can only use it for ATP privileges for 6 calendar months and Commercial privileges for 12 calendar months.

Have fun soloing!

Could you post a link to the basic criteria for my 1st class? As mentioned about 2 topics below, i've always been in good health just a bit on the "large" size with my weight. Also is there a price difference in trying to get a 1st compared to just a 3rd for my privet pilot?
