I have a question regarding the letter of evidence that the FAA issues for color vision deficiencies. When I got my medical certificate, I failed the ishihara test. The AME told me to go and take the signal light gun test, which I thought would be no problem. I went and scheduled the test without researching beforehand, which was a big mistake, and a big hassle. The only place in Hawaii that does this test is a small airport near Honolulu, which cost me a flight and taxi over. The FAA was very hard to schedule with, and they would only do it at their convince, which was 1:00 on a sunny afternoon, otherwise I would have to wait for several months before any inspector was willing to come out again. Being unprepared, I took the test and failed because I got white and green confused in the bright sun. I was shocked, since my color vision deficiency is very minor. I found out that I should have taken alternate color tests before attempting the light gun, since I doubt the FAA will allow the results of another color test to get a letter of evidence at this point. I can only retake the light gun once more, which makes me nervous to try it again. I want to fly commercially, and cannot have this restriction. What are my options at this point? PLEASE HELP! |

You can still take ay of the alternative color tests for a letter of evidence. You can only take the color light gun test one more time though. Try the Farnsworth lantern test - if you fail there is no penalty.

Thank You for your response!!! I am very relieved to know that I still have a chance to take an alternate test before risking it all and taking the light gun test again. I have been stressing about this issue for a while!

Hi You should try buying the Ishihara 14 plate edition. You only have to recognise 6 out of the first 11 plates. I can see 7 of them easily, and I would probably also fail the light gun test. Strange as I am being diagnosed as red/green deficient and it is the white/green that is hard. Good luck |
