Default Tone Deaf Friend, Any Suggestions?

I have a good buddy who is in training with me but not sure if he will be able to finish due to the fact that he is tone deaf. He can hear well, but certain tones he cannot pick up. He sometimes has a hard time hearing ATC. Does anybody know of any pilots with the same problem? If so how do they cope? I told him hearing aids may work, but i am not sure.

Wear a headset where he can adjust the volume.
