Simplex that is. You know the cold sore/fever blister variety! I have one right now that started this morning, and it's in my nose, and it hurts. The whole left side of my nose is swollen and tender to the touch! Is there anything I can do to make it's duration short and sweet? |

Acyclovir or Valtrex - both prescription drugs.

| Old Skool | I said of the cold sore variety (which technically as you know is a herpes strain), nothing of a sexually transmitted variety! Yuck! |

Ok, there's the answer! Lemme close this because I already know where it's going. If you have more info, Dr. Forred, lemme know and I'll re-open it. Update: Re-open! It's informational folks!

We treat type 1 herpes (hepers simplex, the kind that causes cold sores) with acyclovir or Valtrex. They shorten the course of the symptoms by about 50%. The generic acyclovir is only $4 by prescription when you buy it at Wal-Mart or Target.

| Senior Member | It is still a pharmaceutical and Lysine works very well to counter the outbreak as well. And it is natural.

Listen to the Doc. Valtrex works great for cold sores. If you catch it in the tingle, it won't last nearly as long. Sometimes, it won't even break the surface if you catch it at the right time. Next time, use some tact with your title. Don't make it so obvious that you're begging for attention.

| Max, as others have pointed out, the same drugs work!

I think it is genetic or somthing, my mom gets them, my younger sister get them, but my older brother and sister both don't. I've been getting them since before I can remember, so this isn't a first! Tonight my mom said that I need to dry it out, she says she normally uses, carmex. I'm goin' to Wal-Greens, tomorrow! In any event sorry to have questioned ya doc, thought you were originally kidding. I'm not worthy!

Abreva, its like 18 dollars, but it relieves the pain so nicely, and it will make it go away in 4 days max. Walgreens is the place! |

| Old Skool | I think that's the t.v. spot that I saw! Prescription or OTC?

Abrev ajust contains alcohol to dry the lesions. It is not anti-viral. As I said earlier, acyclovir is $4 on prescription from Wal-Mart or Target and it is anti-viral.

Are cold sores typically in advance of a cold or flu? Because I think that I'm coming down with something! |

Umm, no. I did get accepted to USC's Biology department when I was a senior in high school though! (I know, that an $4.00 might get me a double tall, non-fat extra-dry cappuccino)
