About three years ago my doctor heard a heart murmer and I had an echo cardiogram done, it showed I had mitro valve prolapse. He said this is a common thing that many people have and don't know it. Anyway, before I found this out I held a third class and a second class medical. I haven't been flying for a couple of years now and would like to get back into it. My question is: When I go to get my 1st class medical do I need to take records of the test? Do I even mention the MVP? Or do I tell them ahead of time? What should I do? Will this be a long process? What are heart related things that will keep you from getting a first class medical? Thanks for your time and help! |

It might help Dr. Forred a little better if you included age and perhaps even ethnic background in the question. Reason being, I had a heart murmur as well, and it was common for black males under the age of 18 to have it. It cleared up as I got older.

Neither one of these is particularly a problem. Of the two, the biscupsid aortic valve is potentially more significant. In any case. you need antibiotic prophylaxis for dental work (including cleaning) and nothing else as long as you have no symptoms.

What about the medical? Do I tell them ahead of time or what wait and see what comes of the physical? Thanks

The MVP is not an issue. The bicuspid aortic valve should be listed and you should take copies of the medical records from the evaluation by the cardiologist to be forwarded to the FAA. They may not do anything with it or they may just want you to get a followup echocardiogram every yrear or so.

I think that I am in the same boat. I have a bicuspid aortic valve with MVP. I had an evaluation about 2 years ago that the doctors didnt seem worried about. I am overweight but my blood pressure and cholesterol results were good. I am in the ATC process and hopefully will be selected for a PEPC, can I take older results or should I have another physical done? Do I need to do anything special to help the process move quickly? Thanks |

Probably the best thing is to have a current evaluation from the cardiologist along with a current echocardiogram report.
