Hi Dr. A quick question regarding my status. I received a Medical/Honorable Discharge from the military due to some issues that came up during my deployment to Iraq. Long story short, I disclosed all the information to the AME when I saw him. He checked me out, and granted me a 1st class medical; so I am good in that department. I am 95% sure that I will begin a flight school soon, but I am afraid that when I go through the hiring process with an airline, they will see on my DD-214 (Military Discharge Papers) that I have a medical "retirement" and pigeon hole me in the hiring process although I possess a 1st class medical. Do you have any advice for me on this matter? Will the 1st class medical that I have be sufficient in the hiring process? I just don't want to get $50,000+ in debt and not be able to get hired on with an airline. I truly appreciate your help and I look forward to hearing from you Dr. Very Respectfully, CA |

For most airlines, the First Class is sufficient. Some carriers like American have their own medicla departments and do a more extensive medical screening so they may have issues. It all depends on why the medical discharge.
