Default Thyroid

Hello! I just went to the AME for a first class medical and he thought my thyroid might be a little swollen. He issued my first class medical and said nothing else but just keep an eye on it.

He also said that it could be hyperthyroidism or an early symptom. After doing research, I noticed weight loss was common. I have lost 30 pounds in a year but have done so by doing the atkins diet, eating smaller portioned meals, and drinking LOTS of water. But being the health nut I am, he reccommended I go to my local physician to ease my mind.

Being a new guy at the regionals, I am concerned that if I do have hyperthyroidism, can I still fly up to my next AME visit? Can I ever fly?

I have a doc visit tomorrow to see what he says, but I am almost wondering if I should just not go. I am 25 years old, 142 lbs, small build and am a male with no family history of any thyroid problems. I have also been under alot of stress with training and a breakup with the significant other. Advice doc? Thanks

Here is the guideline for hyperthyroidism.
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...perthyroidism/

This is the one for hypothyroidism:

The tests to have done are a TSH and if it is abnormal, a free T-4. You don't need other screening tests.

So by reading those, If you have it they will defer your medical until further review?

Does it help if you submitt the paperwork months before your medical so there is no delays or deferments?

Yes, you need to have the FAA clear you. I frequently get all of the documentation together and as the AME call either OKC or the Regional FLight Surgeon and get a verbal apporval to issue the certificate. I need all of the documentation first because I am going to have to send it the OKC.

Yes, sending the documentation in ahead of time is very helpful to speed up the process for you.
