Default 1. Tinnitus and 2. Essential Tremors

Herr Doctor,
I've been experiencing tinnitus every week or so. One week in my left ear and the next in the other. Ringing sensation. I used to go to a lot of loud bars and not wear earplugs under my headset. What can I expect to happen with my hearing in the future? I'm 37.

I also have very mild essential tremors in my hands. My hands shake a bit and it's worse in my left than in my right hand. I've had these since I was 20. It's quite noticeable when i hold a cup in my left hand but not in my right hand. They're not getting worse and they've been the same ever since. I've always passed my cat 1 medical exam, and they've never interfered with my ability to manipulate the controls of an aircraft or perform any of my other duties as a pilot, however the shaking is quite noticable. Is there any treatment for the essential tremors? I've brought it up with my AME and he has said that he is not aware of any but perhaps you would know of some.

Thanks,
DD
Thanks

1. Tinnitus. This can be due to hearing loss, the excessive use of aspirin, blockage of the eustachian tubes, etc. If it is continuing, you should see your doc to be sure the eustachian tubes are not blocked. If they are OK, get an audiogram so you know how much hearing loss you have. Noise induced hearing loss will not get better so protect your hearing from now on.

2. You can use propranolol for essenital tremors. Just be aware that when you the propranolol at a medical, the FAA will want some kind of documentation from your doctor about the tremors. If it is not bothersome (except when you drink HOT coffee) you may not want to treat them.

Hey Doc,
Your advise is much appreciated. I'll definitely look into the audiogram and protect my hearing from now on. Propanolol looks like an interesting option for the shakes.
Thanks again,
DD
