Default A FRIEND OF MINE ...

So ... let's say a friend of mine ... just had a vasectomy and took two of the prescibed vicodins, last dose yesterday afternoon ... how long should my friend wait before resuming flying responsabilities.
By the way my friend is feeling pretty good, just a little bit of local dull pain yet.
My friend thanks you.

Jim

It's very thoughtful of you to look out for your "Friend". Tell your friend I hope everything heals nicely.

The doctor who delivered me did his own vasectomy - he is quite a nutter though.

Ahh, it's nothing.....Real quick and easy. A small incision, couple of snips, a few vicodin and Wallah. You're done.

Hope your friend feels better.

Max, I am not sure what the rules are in Arizona, but here in the midwest, we can only be married to one woman at a time.....

Eh, maybe. But I vehemently believe in protection. I know that they're not 100% effective. But I'd probably have a big issue messin with my boys!

Well considering what she has done for us ... I mean my friend ... it is but a small contribution to the family cause. We ... I mean "they" are just at a point in thier lives where this was the right thing to do for all the right reasons. Although we ... I mean they love children but it is now the time in life to consider what life has to offer us in our middle age.

Thanks for the words of comfort everyone, and thanks Doc for the professional opionion.

And Jtrain ... I'm still around ...

Now who's it worse for to have? The guy getting a vasectomy or the girl getting tubal ligation?

A vasectomy are significantly less risky than any procedure that would prevent the growth of a family for women - it is probably safer than have impacted wisdom teeth taken out.

Tubal Ligation is a major surgical procedure whereas Vasectomy is minor outpatient procedure.

Is this the name of the surgery that ties the females tubes?

Tubal ligation is where the tubes are tied. This is pretty (though not 100%!) effective. There are women who become pregnant despite being tied just like there's the occasional woman who becomes pregnant even though the man has had a vasectomy.

Getting a tubal is major surgery. You have to be cut open, and deal with all the possibilities of related infection, etc.

When women have a known/scheduled c-sec for delivery of a baby, being tied at the same time is something to consider. The operation is going to be taking place anyway, so, if your family is complete, why not consider the ligation while the abdomin is open anyway? Obviously this is a big decision, and in the event of a unscheduled c-section, this is not a decision to make in the heat of the moment, when there's SO many other things happening. Looking back on my c-sec, I wish I had been tied after our second baby was born. The c-sec was not planned nor expected, nor was his delivery on that day expected or planned! The thought briefly crossed my mind as I lay there staring at the operating room ceiling lights, but I knew enough to understand that I/we were in no right mind to make a decision like that at that time. To go back and get tied now, would mean another major abdominal surgery, and another multi-week recovery time. Not something I really want to go through with two little kids depending on me.

Our son was an emergancy C-section, but it was interesting as the doctor showed me things inside my wife. She finally asked for him to put her back together. I had a digital camera with me and took a shot of or son at birth + 5secs, but never thought to get shots of my wife insides!

Mayo Clinic Finds New Female Sterilization Technique Not Only Quicker and Easier for Patients, But Cheaper

http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2004-rst/2512.html

Quote:
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic gynecologists have discovered that hysteroscopic sterilization, a new method of plugging the fallopian tubes to prevent conception, will save patients money compared to laparoscopic tubal ligation, the most commonly used method of sterilization for women.

"Patients love it," says Abimbola Famuyide, M.B.B.S., Mayo Clinic gynecologic surgeon, who conducted the cost-comparison study. "There are minimal side effects. Patients typically leave the hospital within an hour, and they are back to work the next day."
I don't know much about it, but maybe it's something to ask your OB/GYN about. Sounds far less less invasive than what you describe.
