Listening to the local news (if you can call KTAR news! ) on the way home, one of the reporters mentioned that local health officials think there's going to be a big outbreak of influenza here in AZ.The expert, which may have been a marketer, mentioned that "Zicam" might be an effective treatment if you take it immediately after the first symptoms show up. True? Not true? More junk science from talk radio? |

You may be looking for a professional opinion but I have taken zicam (I am not a marketer) before, I used the gel that you put up your nose and it worked wonders for me. I started to get the tickle in the back of my throat that usually indicates I am about to get the cold and I used zicam and the next day I was ok. I wasn't 100% but I was able to get out of bed and function. I still had a bit of a runny nose but I didnt encouter the lethargic feeling that normally accompanies a cold.

Marketing. They are talking about the true influenza virus. The best thing to do is get a flu shot. Lacking that, if you start Relenza or Tamiflu as soon as the symptoms start, the influenza is much more mild. We are talking about a significant respiratory infection with fairly sudden onset of fever, chills, cough and generally feeling crappy. It lasts for 10 days to 3 weeks in the more advanced cases. It is especially dangerous for the elderly and infants (they have a greater risk of dying from it) and the real complication is a secondary bacterial pneumonia. People with this disease are so sick that walking to the bathroom will be almost impossible because of the fatigue. It is at epidemic proportions in HOTLANTA (Atlanta) right now and is expected to arive in PHX in about 2 weeks according to the CDC. By the way Doug, KTAR must be news,Patty listens to it every day |

Yes, especially with the predicted outbreak on the way.
