| I am just working on my private pilot's license now and went to have my flight physical the other day. I wanted to have an EKG done just to make sure that there wasn't something that might trip me up in the future. The doctor told me that my heart was fine and that the EKG will not show anything abnormal and to not worry about it. Is this assessment something I can be confident about? Right now, I am just seeing how well I adapt to flying, but may want to make a career change down the road. I figure it would be best to spend $60 to get an EKG today and find out there is a problem than show up for my first class flight physical and get bounced after spending thousands of dollars on training. I didn't want to argue with the doctor and left without the order for an EKG... |

| It depends on how old you are. If you are young, the doc is right. What an ECG determines is the heart rate, the rhythm, any conduction abnormalities and relative size of the heart. In young folks, rhythm and conduction abnormalities are about the only things detected but they are uncommon. |
