Unhappy Pneumonia

I was diagnosed with pneumonia shortly before Thanksgiving. Initially I was treating with antibiotics, prednisone and an albuterol nebulizer. I've now improved to the point where I'm back at work and using only an albuterol inhaler. Since I've never had pneumonia before (I don't recommend it), I'm just curious as to whether this is something where I can self-certify that I'm recovered and fit to fly or if I need to see an AME before flying again.

Gracias!

Yes, you can self certify. You should report it on the next physical though.

NOTE: since the lungs are where one acquired their oxygen and alttitude can affect the function of the lungs, I would not fly until I can comfortable walk briskly for 100 yards without feeling short of breath (of course if you never could do this why try ) before flying. This is especially true if you will be non-pressurized and above 5000 feet.

Get a pneumonia vaccine and flu shot!

Follow-up question (if I may): my pneumonia is resolved, but I've got a continuing cough due to post-pneumonial bronchitis (???) for which I've been prescribed prednisone. According to AOPA, the FAA is OK with prednisone up to 20mg. Is that right?

I've got a checkride scheduled early next month when I'll still be on the prednisone (20 mg by then), and I'm just trying to figure out if I need to reschedule it (again).

Thanks!

The FAA does not want you to fly with any more than 20 mg a day. The DE will not ask you if you are on medications, he will just want to see your current medical certificate.
