Recently when I have been flying in the back on an airliner, I get immense pain on decent in my sinus, my eyes water, and feel like they are on the verge on popping out. When I board the airplane I am as healthy as a horse, and never ever have sinus issues on the ground - my diagnoses is I am a BIG time plane sleeper, before they close the doors, my head is down, I fall asleep in seconds and only wake up when I start to hurt (sometimes passing through what I would guess 10,000 others only for the last couple thousand). Is this pain likely caused from the position of my head (in my chest)? Would being awake 15-20 minutes before we start our decent solve this issue? Maybe add a good nose blow in there too? If not can I get a prescription for first class? Would my insurance cover it? Thanks for your help, you are a tremendous asset!!! |

I am sure the quality of the air in first class is much better You should try Afrin and/or Claritin before you board the aircraft. It may help. If you smoke, STOP! Try waking up 45 minutres before the end of the flight (before the descent begins). Also try to "pop" your ears as you descend. If these suggestions don't help see an ENT doc for an examination and other treatment options. |

Thanks for your advise - I am a passionate non-smoker - the only time you will ever find me smoking is when I am on fire. I will do as suggested on this weeks flight, and if I still struggle I will go and see an ENT - I guess he is the one who will write the prescription for first class - right? |

You may also receive tooth pain in this same situation. If the roots of your teeth are close to your sinus' (like mine) the pressure causes your teeth to ache terribly. (I have only had this problem in a descent in an MD-80 oddly enough). My dentist also told me to take a decongestant (non drowsy) to help remidy the problem
