Default Rotator Cuff Surgery

I'm going under the knife and will need five weeks in a sling, so obviously, I can't fly then. But then after the sling comes off, do I need to see a doctor to get cleared or can I just fly when I think I'm safe to?

I don't envy you. My left rotator cuff is torn. There was one point last year I couldn't move my arm for two days. After seeing the doc and an MRI yup its torn. Always had problems since high school in 91 old football injury. Needless to say I put off being cut open, I get by just fine if I don't sleep on that side. I will need to have it fixed if I go to the regionals. Good luck on the recovery. I know a few people who have had this surgery. Key is the therapy on getting back into the swing of things.

I just got done with a long knee surgery recovery and faced the same question. First, I set a reasonable performance goal with my Physical Therapist (single leg press of 100 pounds with the bad leg). Once that was accomplished, I flew a complete company recurrency check (non-PIC) with a check instructor on-board and briefed on my condition. When that was complete with no injury-related issues, I took the documentation to my doctor at the next post-op visit and had him sign a "return to full work duty" form. Copies of all documentation are in my company records and personal logbook for reference.

It's a pain in the butt, but should cover all bases and provide sufficient documentation to my AME at the next Medical.

Good luck with the surgery!

If it isn't fixed, it's broken.
