Default \"color blind\" in the military

1st post here. I'm an aviation student at WMU currently. When I took my medical test, I guess I am color blind. Never knew it before. I took the signal light test from the tower and passed with no problems. I have heard that with this "deficency" I am automatically ruled out of military flying. Is this true or are there any exceptions? I am not planning on entering the military but would like to keep all of the doors open. If there are exceptions to this rule, I would love to know about them so anyone with any knowledge on the subject, please inform me.

Can only speak for the AF here....

You are DQ from the Air Force if you can't pass the PIP test (the numbers-in-circles game). Used to have a clause to allow the FALANT test instead (which is similar to the light gun test), but was overturned a few years back. No waivers for color vision will be granted.

I think the Navy and/or Army may still allow the FALANT as an approved color vision testing device. If you haven't already, might want to post over in Baseops.net's Flight Med section and get a response from the flight docs over there. They might know the other branches better than I do.

In any case, if you really want in bad, and do require a waiver for one of the other branches, try to get your color vision deficiency defined by an opthalmologist. As in, is it red-green, blue-yellow, etc., and the degree of the deficiency.

I was told the same thing when I was checking out the AFA during my college search. FWIW, I was told that during WW2 and 'Nam that colorblind soldiers we're used as snipers because they could see past camoflouge.

So I think those 5-10% of us are actually the normal ones and everyone else is the screwed up ones .
