Hey all. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Anyway, I have a question about the exam for the 3rd class medical certificate. Do you have to be 16 to get a 3rd med./Student Pilot cert.? I'm 15 and will be 16 May 1. I'm scheduled for an exam this Thursday (3/25), and I don't want to go if I can't get the combo certificate. Thanks. |

Hi, and welcome to JetCareers! I have looked in the FAR/AIM book and I don't see anything about having to be a certain age in order to get your 3rd class medical certificate. As for obtaining a Student Pilot License you must be at least 16 years of age. So if it were me I would hold off on getting the medical and just wait till I am eligible for the Student Pilot License, because it is done easily together and can be done in one simple trip. Hope this helps! |

You don't have to get the student certificate at the doctor's office. After you get your medical certificate you could go to the FSDO, fill out an 8710 and get your student certificate later, but I suppose if you want to get it done in one trip you could re-schedule. I guess it depends on how easy it is to get an appointment with the AME.

Dustin, If you plan on soloing on May 1st, your 16th birthday, you're going to need a 3rd class medical, or higher. I recieved my 3rd class when I was 15 so I could solo on my 16th in July. My birthday happened to be on a Sunday and the AME wasn't open so I got it a few weeks in advance so I could get my student pilot certificate. If I were you, I would just get it now and get it over with ; |

[ QUOTE ] Thanks for the welcome. ![]() And thanks for the help. Looks like I'll be canceling that exam. [/ QUOTE ] Don't cancel it just yet. Call the AME first. I soloed the day after my 16th birthday. I had my medical AND student pilot certificate issued a month or so beforehand. The doc put in the "Limitations" section, "Not valid until 04 FEB 1999." |
