Default question

Do airlines have drug tests? Does the FAA require it? I would think that would be a good rule.

Some airlines (Alaska, for one) and corporate flight departments are even testing for nicotine now.

Good on them, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing I hate more than being stuck in a cockpit with a twitchy, tar-breathed nicotice-craving pilot for several hours.

Default Brilliant Idea

Here's a brilliant idea, lay off the drugs and you won't have to ask because it won't matter. Get clean, then start worrying about getting a medical.

Come on now, give him the benefit of the doubt.

Windwalker, to answer your question, no it is not typical that they check for drugs in the medical. The urine test is for diebetes. However the FAA can at any time, for any reason, give you a drug test and if you refuse to take it or fail it you get you certificate yanked.

Quit the drugs man, last I need is another hippie writing me about his love of aviation and how bad it is that 'the aeronautical industrial machine' doesn't let him enjoy the pleasantries of herb.

Flying is hard enough when you're at 100%, it's got to be a pain in the ass if your crewmember has cotton mouth and litters the cockpit with scores of empty packages of snack mix.

There was a kid I went to highschool with who always used to brag about flying stoned. I dont know why but it REALLY ticked me off. I wanted so badly for him to tell me directly and then to just stand up and hit him square in the face. I dont want some idiot missing a traffic advisory and running into me just cause he had to 'get high.' .... no pun intended.

Well, if you're gonna shoot an approach to minimums "on weeeeeeeed" an NDB approach is the one to do cause the minimums are pretty high. Now, an ILS to minumums while stoned? I don't even want to think about it.

While due to my condition now I am advocating medicinal marijuana as the state of OH will not allow me to do so. However, I fully agree that it has no place in your system while driving let alone flying. I know that the sensations of flying require attention to the subtleties of moving in three distinct axes. If we as professionals choose not to fly while having congestion trouble the same reguard should be taken in reguards to drugs both prescription and not. At this time I will not drive. I can, but i feel it is more responsible not to. The reason why I feel testing (which costs money, time and resources) exists is becuase we cannot overall trust everyone to universally use good judgement. End of my rant.
