Default Jax instructor?

Hey guys, wondering if anyone out there knew or knows of an instructor at the Jacksonville location named Rich Tillery?

Anyone ever been up with him or heard about him?

Yes, He's the Chief Flight Instructor at ATP. He handles the private pilot program at KCRG in JAX. He is an amazing pilot! And a pretty good singer

Hey thanks for the info, have you ever been up with him? Does he have any special tricks for you on check rides or anything?

I know some instructors like to play the mind games and annoy you on the pre-solo stage check while you are flying just to see how you handle distractions.

He showed my around KCRG when I first started looking at ATP in January. Seemed like a pretty good guy. If I recall he did make a few jokes about yelling a bit in the air while instructing, but I don't know how serious he was. Also, I think he is a rotorwing pilot. He said he hopes that some day ATP will offer a rotorwing add on program (I know the license isn't a add on, the program would be). Other than that I can't help too much.

Meaning what? I am probably going to have to fly off about 20 hours when I get down there next month... is there something I should be aware of (and Tim as well I guess)? Or are you just having fond memories?

Rich is the chief pilot for ATP. All instructors in the office have to pass a "Rich Ride" before going to an ATP location. If you fly with authority and do what is expected of you, you should do well with him. I have heard he can make a grown man cry in the air though. Enjoy.

Rotarwing huh? I am guessing he is former military. I have heard some stories about him and that spurred my questions. Perhaps a Drill Sgt in the air I suppose?

I think I would prefer an atmosphere mildly on the military side but the whole yelling in the cockpit thing might not fit too well with me when I am trying to learn to fly a plane. If someone is giving me instruction to fly a plane and starts yelling and going nuts they are either going to simmer down with the quickness or I am landing that plane. I guess if you can make a guy like that happy though you should be able to make anyone happy?

Anyone else have any stories about going on a "Rich Ride"? I am interested!

I would be more concerned with him trying to shot at a bird or passing plane than with him yelling at you...
like it was said earlier... if you are confident in your decisions I would not worry about his ride....(too much)

I had mentors who were like this. At first you wished you never crossed paths, afterwards you thank them for pushing your professional limits to become a leader in the industry.

Learn from the criticism...

I forgot about that... He did tell me some story about going on pretend straffing missions in a 172 out over the river in JAX (the Elizabeth river I think?). Or something like that. Scared the hell out of some people fishing I guess.

He was a Cobra Helicopter Pilot in the Army. He is very loud and obnoxious, but that is his job, to distract you.

I flew with him as a private pilot and see him around the airport. He is a nice guy, funny too... but as far as flying goes, be pilot in command! The last thing he wants to do is endorse you and then you go kill yourself or you and someone else.

Sounds like a good instructor to me. I am looking forward to the "Rich Ride" someday soon. From what I have heard on here and from other sources, he seems to get the job done.

He's a great guy, and will teach you a lot. He is looking for a command presence in the cockpit - someone who can handle an emergency, knows what to do, and will do it.

Yea, I fell into a Rich-trap on my ride. I won't spoil the ride for future instructors by revealing the trap. I learned from the experience. It's funny, when I revealed what happened to my ATP instructor, he laughed and said that he did the same thing. Remember, have fun on the ride and don't sweat it too much.

HAHA, I cant beleive we have people talking about the Rich Ride on jetcareers. He's famous!

Rich is a great instructor. A lot of experience. He's also an A&P, so during ground school you get more in-depth knowlegdge of systems than you might get somewhere else. I enjoyed working for him. I learned a lot while I was "under his wing" Some of the funniest stories from ATP are from what have happened in the cockpit with Rich. He'll ride you, but he's only pushing you so you can be a better pilot.

He expects more out of you than you realize you have. When I first started, I would be soaked with sweat trying to land. He would laugh . . . The day before my PP checkride he took me out and we flew the profile, at the end on the way in,he patted me on the back, then he said, "You're not soaken wet! You're ready." and I was

Maybe he should get his own "profile" part in the Private Pilot section on the ATP website...

He has a lot of experience in flying both fixed wing and rotor. If you want to fly with the best he is the man. He will teach you things/tricks you thought were not possible with an aircraft.

Hey Paul, are you doing the Private right now down in Jax? If so when did you start and how many were in your class and how many are still in your class?

I imagine it would be hard for someone just starting out with 0 hours doing the private in less than two months!
