Ok I settled with Key Bank and Im ready to get back into the ring (flying) I live in DC and the ATP in manassas is about a 30-45 min drive away. I am still open to all flight schools as of right now. Im thinking ATP in manassas so I could stay close to home and friends... My question to you guys is.. is ATP a good enough school to stay close to home for? or am I shortingmyself out of finer schools throughout the country??? Ding Ding round 1 |

It's good enough for me to drive 10+ hours to go to. |

10+ hours is a long way, but you wont be making it everyday, I would stay at home and commuting every morning

I got my PPL at an airport than was exactly an hour from my house.. An hour commute is minimal I would think.. However, it might get old sometimes.. Although, the ACPP fee's include a place to stay and whether or not you choose to stay there, you still pay for them.. If you think you might want to go to ATP, and still want to be near home, go to your Manassass and stay in the ATP Apartments or use them as a crash pad, and if you get time and want to come home, drive home. THat's what I'd do. |

I live about 45 minutes from the Dallas ATP and am just wrapping up the program (CFI-single and CFII checkrides this week). I'd recommend the program to anyone.... 1) Nationwide cross country is just a fantastic experience, 1a) Dispatch support 2) Can't beat the equipment, 3) ~90 days in and out, 4) Instructor opportunity to get all that multi time. Happy to answer more specific questions Jeremy |

Thanks Merlin, Yeah I think if I go fixed wing, i will go to ATP....everythings still up in the air. upon completion of ATP's program I would be a 300 hour commercial pilot with a 40 thousand dollar debt so i have to be smart with my choice. Im not to thrilled in instructing...Im not knocking cfi's its just I cant picture myself doing it. hmmm what to do..

Hey ATA if you don't mind me asking what was your settlement with Key? I really feel bad for you guy's and gal's that got taken by them and just wondering how you made out. And I'm glad you are still working toward your goals.

Merlin, What percentage of students are applying for instrucing jobs at ATP and what percentage of those are getting hired? I heard once that about half are applying and about half of those get hired? sound right to you? Thanks |

Sorry to jump in here, but that anti-CFI attitude was what I had a while back. I'm in no way saying that instructing is for everybody, and we've all flown with the horrible instructors that didn't want to be there. I will say this though...don't NOT get the CFI because you think you might not like it (sorry about the double negative). Get it and if you don't use it, then fine, but don't shoot yourself in the foot. Trust me, this comes from experience, and I'll say that now that I've been instructing for a while, I've learned a tremendous amount from it and am glad I did it this way. //end intrusion// |

Wow that is fantastic! I can't even imagine the anger and sadness you guy's went through over that. It has been bugging me since it happened and I wasn't even involved. Well kudos to Key for doing that and I hope you enjoy the rest of your training. |

I have no idea what numbers of students apply for instructing jobs and how many get it. Half to apply sounds about right to me, but it is purely speculation. If you want to work for ATP, what is important is that you work hard and treat your student time there as a 90-day interview. Jeremy |

Thanks, I guess there is no one actually keeping stats on that. I just think getting that Job there would be a great way to build ME time. I am not sure if I would like going through ATP and then having to hunt down a FBO CFI position somewhere else. Kinda hard to keep up on that precious ME time like that. |

[ QUOTE ] I guess there is no one actually keeping stats on that. [/ QUOTE ] That's probably by design; I'm sure they're very aware it's a major sales point for their program. |
