Default Cute Is...

Coming out of Columbia today we check in with Departure. They start climbing us as Continental calls up and ask if there is a Seminole 36699 on frequency. That call sign triggers memories from long ago for me so I figure it must be an ATP bird (a check of my logbook later confirms that). Anyhow, Approach says that he thinks they are off on another local freq and gives them the number. Being bored I follow them over there on COM2 and listen in as CAL repeats their question over there. Apparently 36699 is in fact hanging out over there and CAL asks the controller to have 36699 come up on 123.45. Being something of a voyeur I follow them over there (while hand flying no less!) and listen in as Dad says hi to Son.

I would guess somebody here knows who it was. I'm trying to figure out where the Seminole came from as I can't recall any training facilities down that way.

36699....brings back memories! I did my CFII in that bird and flew quite a few x/c's in it.

Too bad Capt Continental doesn't realize that 123.45 should not be used as an air to air frequency. Approved air to air is 122.75 or 122.85.

There have been pilots cited for using 123.45 as it is an active ATC frequency.

Use the correct frequency if you want to B.S. air to air.

123.45 is used over the Atlantic for air-to-air.
