So for you fine folks that are CFIs @ ATP, how tough is it to get time off? I mean like 3 or 4 days in a row. I know most peeps are trying to log a lots of time as fast as possible, but how about those that aren't so "in a hurry?"

aha ah ha ha ha ha ..... been instructing since february, I've had 2 days off, which I got lucky, because there was nothing scheduled for those days. Can't wait till my vacation in december. |

the cool thing about workin at most ATp locations is that you make your own schedule based on how many students are there for training. With career pilots, its between them and thier instructor as to what thier schedule will be. I usually try and set up at least one day a week off with my career students. I call it "written test study day" lol. Add-on students are expecting to come and get thier rating in 3-4 days..theres no flexibility there. So I guess it all depends on what location your at and what your working; Career pilots or add-ons.

Does ATP give Sundays off? or is it a 7 day work week?

| Senior Member | You work whatever you need to work to get your students done. Unless you're in a tiny location plan on 7 days a week...unless the planets align and your schedule works our just right to give you a day off. I don't remember having an entire day off yet (6 weeks as an instructor). I've had a couple short days where I'm only at the airport 4-5 hours though. If it's a one time event you need time off for, you can talk to the VP JK once you get hired and you'll probably get the time off approved with no problem. If you're thinking "I want to work 3 days a week", forget it. ATP is not the place to make a career as a CFI.

Take time off when you're dead.

We got 8 days off (in a row even) for our wedding/honeymoon last Dec. Hubby was instructing add-on's in Jax at the time. He also got occasionally days off for other family commitments. It is possible. Plan ahead and don't be afraid to ask. But be sure you have a good reason for it. K

Keep in mind this is a while ago, but when I was there I never had problems getting time off as needed. I was able to get just about every Wednesday afternoon/evening off to play Ultimate Frisbee and the occasional one or two days off in a row to go do other stuff. It all depends on how busy you are, who you are teach (add ons vs. ACPs) and how willing your other instructors are to cover for you. One of our instructors took 4 days off to go camping with his girlfriend. JAX kept calling trying to reach him about some paperwork, but he was always "up flying" or already gone for the day. I took his 2 students and did their CRM training during that time and that was all that had to be covered. |
