From what I’ve read it sounds as if a lot of guys get as many written tests done before entering the program. For those of you who didn’t have them done, how hard was it to make time for it during the program? I just feel like I’ll do better on them if I’m learning the concepts while training.

I'm in the program right now and didn't have any test finished when I started. There's time to study for the test during training if you don't have a life or outside responsibilities (wife and kids etc.) Personally I recommend(wished) I had gotten as many out of the way as I could before starting the program. But as the saying goes" hindsight is always 20/20.)

Funny this thread came up. There's the CAX, II, FIA and FOI writtens, along with the CFI PRetest for ATP's cfi school that has to be done, along with the commercial multi prep/ checkride within a week of being finished with cross countries. 4 guys nearly got the boot this week for not finishing up.... so yea, I recommend knocking out as many writtens as possible before starting.

Everybody says to get the writtens done ahead of time. I think I pushed 8 or 10 career pilots through and not one of them had everything (or anything) for that matter done ahead of time. The thing is, you aren't going to have a clue about any of the instrument stuff so either you can just memorize the answers and take the test or actually learn the stuff during ground and THEN memorize the answers and take the test. Much easier that way. I would say try to get them all done before you are done with the Instrument training. |

I'm in Riverside now. As a matter of fact, my IFR written will be done today. Apart from that, I don't have any other writtens done. Niether do any of my roomates or my training partner. The writtens are a whole lot easier when the training coinsides with whatever writtens you are preparing to take. Just my .02

Should one get PPL and INstrument ratings out of the way before attending ATP? I see several do it, but if you're just going to learn it over again and you're paying for it ATP.. why do it?

| Some do it because they come from places like hawaii where 50K is actually cheap when it comes to flight training. I do agree though that if you have your instrument and over 100 hours, just continue with it don't bother with ATP.

you got enough time, most of us did not even finish our FIA, FOI, and sometimes AGI few days before we get sent of to CFI school.
