Default ATP CFI Opinion Needed

Do you think there is enough time in the day to be a CFI for ATP while doing an online 4 year bachelor's degree? Thank you.

I asked the same question a few months ago. They said it would be very difficult, probably impossible if you instruct at a busy location like Phoenix or Jax. If you are at a slower location it might be possible. I'm sure an instructor could help you out more but that's what I was told.

I am doing it with Embry Riddle Distance Online. But it's easy. It compromises of a weekly reading assignment, a midterm, and a final. Pretty easy. But I only take 6 hours at a time.

It maybe difficult to accomplish, but if you read the story of Travis Fine on their packet he was able to do it. Being an ATP CFI is a full time committment even on the weekends.

Unless your in Daytona. This past weekend they used the race as an excuse to give everyone the weekend off blaming the TFR. There were plenty of planes taking off/landing.

How many times a year does the Daytona 500 happen again?

The few days before and after the 500 DAB is slot restricted and you must get an arrival and departure slot. You may have seen planes coming and going but it's all time restricted.
This is also the only weekend those instructors will have off until Thanksgiving and Christmas. Give' em a break!

Travis Fine is an exception to the rule. The dude was CRAZY motivated (in a good way).

No BS...What are the odds of someone getting hired at ATP as a CFI that goes thru their CFI program and not the whole 90 day program.

I'm flexible and willing to work at any of their centers in the south and east coasts if needed.

I'm looking at all options and it looks like the best one for the training is a local FBO that comes highly recommended w/ good refs.

Thanks,
LAFF

With the way the Regionals are snapping up instructors these days... and with your background... I'd say you'd have no problem.

I'm leaning towards getting into full time instruction at Bakersfield or Napa. I'd like to get back to California. I enjoyed the multi-cultural , punjabi communities in that state. I haven't found that anywhere else in the USA.

Bakersfield is nice... that's the first and only place I've ever had "French-basque" food.

You work at ATP?

I just called their 1-800# and asked about the CFI programs and instructing after I'm done.

Things will change but I'm sure ATP will always hire people that want to instruct there. I got the feeling they, like most places, have a soft spot for military vets. <grin>

Two years or more at one of those established academies is a good deal. Who knows it may open up more doors later in management with them down the road...

Ok...I getting more of a solid plan together for training and those critical time building / paying your dues years...

Yeah... ATP was actually founded on getting Military guys their ATP rating when they were transitioning out to civvie life and applying at the airlines... so there is definately a soft spot for those that served.

I used to instruct for them from '03-'04... I'm an FO at ExpressJet now.

I'm in the process of trying to create an Alumni Association for them... so I still try to stay in contact with what going on.

I know a fellow who used to instruct there at Bakersfield for IFTA (Nippon) from 92-98... he's a senior Captain with us... if you'd like... I'd be happy to try to hook you two up if you have any questions if that's the route of instruction your looking for out there. He was a flight instructor and the Chief Ground instructor for them.

Please do get us in contact with each other.

I won't be doing it for as long as he did but I certainly want to for 2-3 years. I have no issue with their 2 year gentleman's agreement.

I fly on Expressjet all the time. I grw up in KLFT - for many years only way home on leave was thru Houston on Expressjet.

Prior military - you would love training/working at ATP. I went right into their 60 day Private program and then the Career pilot program straight out of the Coast Guard and loved the regimented strict training environment. Its get it done right the first time or go home, and I loved it. Some guys didn't do so well with the stress of having to fly with the Chief pilot, but I actually liked the guy. He's funny as heck, prior military, and the dude can fly anything with wings or rotors.

But ATP is definitely friendly to the military. Just going through their program out of Active duty life was a nice transition for me.
