Default Working hours as instructor

Once you make it to a base training center, whats a typical work week like for an instructor? Would it be possible for one to do night grad school courses at a college while instructing? Just trying to work out the possible options for flight training and looking for a little info into this.

Thanks in advance.

It would depend on the location you got. Here at JAX, it would be virtually impossible. I've been going in before 7am and not getting home until 8pm or later. But, the bright side is that I've flown 52 hours in 10 days!

When I had my own office in Richmond, there were weeks I did little or no work for ATP. I did a lot of other flying and had a full social schedule.

When I moved to Vegas to work at that ATP office, I flew well over 100 hours a month and worked 14-16 hours per day. Sometimes meals were difficult to work into the schedule. The flying is the fun part-it's the office work, test proctoring, cleaning, ground school, fueling, returning calls, figuring out the schedule, and so on that make up the other 8 hours of the day.

Having said all that, Vegas was so much fun-all we did was fly, sleep, and go to casinos. Life was simple!

it all depends on the location. some are super slow, like the richmond office was. (hence the closing). Some are crazy busy, like jax ( you dont even have time to do your laundry). ATP the company demands you to be on call for the most part. Its not the pay that kills you, believe it or not. its the schedule. it sux because its always changing.

Funny... somebody just asked this in the internal ATP forum. Seeing as I am really lazy I'll just paste my answer in here too.

I'll take a stab at this one. I'm currently an instructor in the field out in Phoenix. I'm sitting waiting for one of my checkride applicants to get back from their ATP ride. I've been here since 5:30 this morning (it gets hot out here!) Once my ride gets back I am done for the day. So today was a 5:30-10:00 day. Tomorrow is going to be a 8-4 and monday most likely is going to be 8 to 8 or so. Or at least that is what I am thinking. Things change however so there is no real way of knowing until the day is actually over. My guy up right now could bust his ride (although I don't think he will) and then instead of only being here until 10 I would have to do re training and I could end up being here until 4 or 5. Hope that helps.

At the Las Vegas location practice instrument approaches into LAS can only be done from 0100-0700. If the CFI course for the current week was unusually large we would have to do flights at 0100, 0300, 0500, then possibly continue VFR training flights at 0700...grab some food, due office chores...etc. and maybe even fly again to max the 8.0/day. Add to that the simulator or ground time throughout the day and it can get looong.

Although now with the level 3 simulator much of the training and checkrides can be accomplished during somewhat normal hours.

Texas station? I hope it was at the food court and not the buffet...just thinking about the buffet makes my stomach churn.

In any event, I wouldn't count on doing night school and instructing at ATP at the same time. As previously stated, you can never really count on having a set schedule...weather changes, last minute starts, last minute cancellations, sick students, et al. Plus I honestly don't know if I'd have the energy to do extra school work after an 8-16 hour day instructing. On top of that you're gonna have to spend some of your down time studying more aviation stuff...lesson plans for students, looking over turbine, interview, etc., getting set for the next step.

Hours are varied but usually long if you have a couple students to fly. This instructing gig is really cutting into my Jetcareers time....

ARR, did my interviews there. I also flew there once in a small 152. Maybe I should go over there visit fellow JCer and let you help me about instrument tests.

Thrown to the wolves this first week, 2 ATPs and a MIFR. It's been settling down though.
