Atp Schedule

I know this has been posted before, BUt wondering how much flying time each day you do at ATP, and how you do It. I mean do you go up and fly for 3hrs at a time, 1 hr at a time, etc. Also, how much groundschool do you do while you are there at the office with the instructor. Obviously home study is a req. but how much classroom do you actually get each day with atp, as well as flying. Any info would be appreciated. I have been toying with going to ATP for a while, and though i am currently satisfied with my current school/instructor, the fact that the planes keep getting grounded is starting to throw back my progress......Thanks.

I think the shortest training flight I went on lasted 1-1.5 hours. Usually they averaged around 2.5 - 3.

What about ground time?.. What would u say was an avg. length day??

The first few days at ATP is all groundschool.. going over the manuevers for your Private-Multi rating and the Seminole systems.. then you will fly about 2.5 hrs every day for about 3 days then take your Private-multi checkride.. once your instrument portion starts you will due about an hour or two of groundschool and a few hours of sim work every day for about a week.. then for a couple of weeks you start flying approaches and knocking out some of your commercial requirements such as the 100nm night cross country and also your long cross country for your instrument rating... then its your IFR chekride and then the cross country phase

so overall there is really no "set" schedule on a day to day basis as to what you will be doing.. if your instructor feels like you need some ground work to grasp a concept, then you will do some ground.. most of the time I'm at the airport from about 9am-6pm every day..sometimes later if you take a trip..

They say 9 days for the multi, 28 for inst. etc, so that is ajust a time line, could be more or less???Thanks again..

Yes thats just a timeline but it turns out to be pretty close on schedule.. For instance my Instrument checkride was scheduled about a week earlier than schedule but some bad weather pushed it back a week right on schedule...it all just depends on the weather, plane situation, instructor workload, and the pace of the student as to if you remain ahead or behind schedule..

So the avg. is around 10 months for self paced? What about for the 90 day, seems some do it faster? Or is it about on target as well?

The self paced program is just that, at your own pace. So if you want to do it in 5 months or whatever I'm sure you could. But yes, the 90 day program turns out to be close to 90 days

Man, I wish I'd had that much time before I went for the multi-private checkride. Looking at the logbook, I had exactly 3.1 hrs in the airplane (including the flight from Atlanta to Huntsville to take the checkride), when I flew the checkride!!

Well, like most of the checkrides there, they moved the date up by 2 days from originally scheduled. Other than that, I'd say they try to get you to the checkride with as few hrs as you absolutely need, to save the company some $$. Instructor felt I was good to go with that few hrs, so we went! Their formula never let me down, I passed every ride 1st shot. Course, with that said, I sure would've gotten more sleep the night before my Priv-Multi if I'd had a few more hrs in the plane, lol. And I still ended up with the multi-hrs advertised, just got them during X-Ctry instead of training for each checkride.

Yeah, a lot of instructors like to do that if they think you're ready. Remember, ATP instructors only make more money if you PASS a checkride the first time. So he most likely knew you were ready before you were...

No, it doesn't save the company money... like you said you ended up with the advertised hours. Instead the Instructor is actually doing you a favor by ensuring that as many of those advertised hours as possible are Multi-PIC hours for you.

Congrats on making it through the whole program without a bust... that's quite an accomplishment!

Guess you're right Bob, never even thought about the fact they still got me the hrs (even though I said it a few sentences later, lol). And thanks on the congrats, though I really feel most people could make it through w/o a bust if they put in the time studying and chair flying. The program is challenging for sure, but doable if you work at it.
