Press ReleaseSource: US Airline Pilots Association The US Airline Pilots Association (USAPA) Representing the US Airways Pilots Speaks out on Airline Consolidation Rumors Including UAL Friday May 16, 12:39 pm ET CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Following yesterday’s US Airline Pilots Association Board Meeting, and prompted by increased media attention on a possible US Airways and United Airlines merger, leaders of The US Airline Pilots Association are evaluating the effects that mergers may have on their Company and their Pilots. “USAPA will not sit back and allow airline environmental changes without protecting the interests of all our pilots,” said President Stephen Bradford. “We will work with our management to maintain our position among those airlines that are financially well-situated, but first things first. The US Airways Pilots will not support any moves towards a follow-on merger until management finishes the job of our last merger.” With 6.8 billion dollars invested and an ATSB restricted contract, the pilots of US Airways are the single largest investor in US Airways. “Regarding United Airlines, their financial health is a major concern to USAPA. With mounting losses, and a dismal balance sheet, UAL may not be the best dance partner for US Airways,” said USAPA President, Stephen Bradford. “If synergies mean cutting capacity at US Airways while we experience record load factors concurrent with positive industry yields, we simply aren’t interested.” USAPA represents over 5,000 US Airways pilots in seven domiciles across the United States |

"airline environmental changes" So what you gonna do guys? Let your company go broke and you're out on the street? Then, you try to get hired, and are now stamped with uSAPa on your forehead. Puhhhhleeezzze. |

The AAA guys know they're ####ed if there is a merger with UAL! The HP pilots will have the last laugh because they in addition to the UAL pilots will outvote the USAPA gang.

I dont know. I really have not heard a single west guy or east guy say they wish for a merger to go through. I've flown on several of their flights and have had several on my plane as well. Both sides I've had discussions with are against the UAL deal. Understanding there's too much take care of in house before they move on. Not saying the west guys want USAPA and would not wish for ALPA to be back in. Just knowing they do have other issues to deal with. |

Too bad USAPA has ZERO real control over a merger, other than making it harder on management.

Correct. UAL pilots will call for a representation election and/or SLI negotiations based on the Nicolau Award. BINDING arbitration. Remember uSAPa? You agreed to it.

I have not heard much about the UAL guys.... But why would the UAL guys want this deal to go through as well? They'd have a few guys on the street as well. If not more then what they are already projecting this fall of 1100 job loss? I dunno just makes one wonder.

I was out drinking with a UAL captain a few months ago and I think it goes something like if UAL enters formal merger/acquisition talks, it reopens their contract for negotiation.

I had lunch with the UAL Comm. Chair yesterday. Trust me... their pilots don't want that merger going through either.

Doesn't Airways need to merge with UAL to have a glimmer of hope to survive? I remember many saying its the end of Airways when uSAPa was voted in. I personally don't think Airways will survive beyond 2 yrs as a standalone with oil prices like this. Its sad the East guys are determined to burn their airline to the ground

I love when somebody says something and they have NO CLUE what they are talking about but they also have no clue that they have no clue. It makes me smile, what can I say. |

I met a Airways West 757 FO on the way home the other day. She spoke to me and since she was one attractive aviatrix, she had my rapt attention. Within 30 seconds she had erupted into this diatribe about USAPA and UAL merger. Suffice it to say she was "agin it". I had visions of her wielding a knife ala Lorena Bobbit. Scared me to death. so anecdotally, i would say their is some reluctance amongst the rank and file.

Not only do Airways pilots not want a merger, neither do the UAL pilots. Fact. If these groups don't want it, it will not happen. And Airways is in much better financial position than many other majors including UAL. As sad as it is, I believe we will see UAL bleed out and go out of business long before Airways does.

I appreciate your passion, but if the two boards want to merge, they're going to merge, with or without the blessing of labor. Delta pilots don't want a merger, all of the unions at NWA don't want a merger, but guess what? Delta acquired NWA thru a stock swap.
