A little information, just in case anyone cares. FO had 1250 Hours, over 500 in the CRJ. Captain had 25,000 hours, over 8,000 hours in the CRJ. (I mention this because some people have accuesed the crew as being new and inexperienced) Captain ASKED to work in the go! operations in December, and begain in January. (On TDY) (I only bring this up because some media reports stated that the pilot was "forced" to work in Hawaii.) For the 3 nights prior to the incident, the Captain had a minimum of 14 hours rest period (More like 14h 55minutes, but if I round up, someone might correct me.) The FO had 38,14,and 14 hours respectively for the 3 nights prior. Average length of duty for Captain prior to incident, 8 hours 39 minutes. First Officer had 9 hours 6 minutes average. (And that was only for 2 days prior, as he had a day off) Bottom line, they were not overworked. The Captain was in Hawaii for over a month, so it's fot a case of "My first night in paradise, lets go party and wake up with a hangover". IF they fell asleep, it wasn't due to exhaustion. Fatigue perhaps, but due to the nature of the flight deck environment. They were not overworked. If they did fall asleep in there, I can't defend that, but I would have to be put in the category of, "I can see how it happened".

Great post. As I mentioned before, this Captain had a history of sleeping in the cockpit. He was also someone who routinely had to smoke during each and every turn, and consumed copious amounts of Pepsi / Coke / whatever he could find. You would think that might have kept him awake, but he usually "crashed" during longer flights. As I mentioned before, he is a rather intelligent man. He just didn't make the most intelligent decisions at work. His behavior simply caught up with him. |
