Default PHL is a cluster...

What a joke this place is....especially the ground crews...

Rant over. I know most of you guys are used to PHL, but it's all new to me.

Oh it can't be that bad. At least you have an APU, a galley for refreshments, and two flight attendants to take care of the passengers.

For some reason, they seem to get all bent out of shape and the holds begin.

Hey...I wasn't complaining about the airplane and the amenities it provides.

Hah... You guys don't even park on the express gates. You've got nothing to complain about.

Sitting on the ground 20 minutes 40' from the jet bridge waiting to be guided in...is this normal? From what I hear, it's just the way it is in Philly..they'll get to you when they get to you.

I will say that the ATC there do an amazing job, that is from seeing tehm in action. Not that you are blaming them, I used to think the same thing untill I went in the tower.

Only two airports in our system that I intentionally avoid: PHL and EWR. I'll swap around all kinds of stuff to avoid either of them.

20 minutes is actually pretty good.

Every once in a while management gets on a "clean up Philly" campaign. They send some new manager out to clean house, and invariably, the guy ends up failing. The guy about 3 managers ago ended up stuffed in the trunk of his car. Labor doesn't play nice in Philly.

Yeah, they're great.

ATC: "Say airspeed"
Us: "250"
ATC: "Maintain current airspeed as long as practical" (about 2 seconds later) "We need you back at your final ASAP"
Us: "Slowing"
ATC: "Your traffic is over the shipyards, clear to land behind that traffic. Spacing looks good. If you need to do S-turns that is approved, clear to land RWY 35"

Spacing looks good, but we need to do S-turns? Hmmm...

I was just looking at some ASAP stuff... We've had a rash of S turns below 500 on 35 recently.

You bunch of wimps. PHL has some issues, but it does not and I mean does not want to see anything similar to what JFK/LGA/EWR has to offer. I'm not even comparing all three together, I'm just listing them. I've gone through PHL many times, and it has some minor problems. Holding for any of the three NYC airports is the norm. It's built into our block times. Top that punks!!!!!

I can't remember who you fly for Soul Brotha (is it racist that the Shaft theme is now stuck in my head?) but if you aren't doing the Airways flying in PHL, you're missing the point. The FAA side of the airport is fine. It's the Airways ramps that are messed up. Honestly, I'd rather deal with LGA ramp ANY DAY then have to mess with PHL ramp.

I'm not working in PHL yet , but thats my hometown airport and where I've gone every time I've flown. Compared to the midwest and the south (excl.ATL), yeah it is a cluster. Compared to the NYC/EWR airports, Philly is a dream dude. I HATE LGA. Let me repeat, I HATE LGA! I will do whatever humanly possible to avoid that place with our bidding system.

I'll compare Philly to LGA here in a few weeks, but I can't possibly believe ANY airport could be worse then LGA or JFK. Hell I bet Seggy could give you some ramblings about that crap hole. I flew in there with him MANY times.

I really don't mind LGA that much. Don't get me wrong, it's not my favorite place to go, but I'd take it over Philly any day.

I avoid Philly like the plague, you'll see soon enough. You won't see the Express side since you get to fly the big airplane (please don't be "That Guy" who keeps saying "We'll follow the little RJ" on ground freq ) but things are almost as messed up on the mainline ramp. And wait until football season, doing turns out of PHL on a Sunday is reason enough to hate the Eagles.

Yep. Although both have insanely long taxi lines that often involve a mad sprint across an active runway.

Best part for us is when ATC asks if we can take 26 or 35 in PHL, it's pretty much an automatic "unable" for us. I've landed on 35 once when we had like 10 passengers, and I've never landed on 26. It takes an act of god to get landing numbers for those runways from dispatch.

I was in CMH the other day and ground said something to a 175 like "give way and follow the RJ" he said "alright follow the little guy..." then a few minutes later a mainline plane, couldn't see the type, was told to follow the same 175. He replied with "give way and follow the little mainline plane being flown by a regional airline" we had a good laugh over that one.

That's strange. I've never had a problem with 35, even with it being shortened, and as long as there is no tailwind, even fully loaded, 26 normally works.

You should have heard DCA ground during the last days of Mid Atlantic when REP had all but a few of the 170s.

Dave...it's bad in PHL...it's bad...started in CMH this morning at 9 a.m. and just got into YUL at 1 a.m.....all because we had to touch PHL on each leg...

That's comical...on both accounts. I'd love to have seen the 175 driver sound like an a$$...on both accounts.

I heard something along the lines of "We'll follow the little guy." last week in CLT. I got a pretty good laugh, even better was the fact that they parked right next to us. When I was getting my paperwork I asked the CA what the deal was and if she had a new FO, her response was, "No, he's just an idiot."
