If you're shooting a visual approach into one of your hubs, what do you(as the PNF) usually put in the altitude preselect before landing?

Missed approach altitude at my airline for the corresponding approach. Or often on the MD-88, we'd just roll it up above our altitude so we wouldn't receive the altitude warning. At my previous airline, we'd dial in "000000" when cleared for the approach and "49000" (just one roll back from "00000") when cleared to land.

If you are cleared for a visual you don't fly the missed approach, ATC ain't expectin ya'll to do that. 1500' AGL (if you want to get picky), but I like most just dial it up so you don't get the nuissance warning.

1500 AGL when cleared for the approach, TDZE when cleared to land rounded up to the nearest hundred

What's an altitude preselect? Wait...ermm...I can't keep saying this crap pretty soon... I'll usually roll it up to some random number that's way above field elevation |

for a visual i select 1500 AGL. we use the nose/taxi lights for cleared approach and cleared to land. If i were cleared for an instrument approach (even in VMC) i preselect the published missed altitude.

MAP if we're backing it up with an ILS, 1500 AGL if it's a straight up visual approach. In MEM the MAP altitude and the altitude they tell you to climb to on intial departure are the same, so it's not that confusing.... Besides, it's a lot easier to dial down the altitude when ATC tells you where they want you to go. Things happen fast, and there's a lot of dials and switches to hit as the PNF if you set it at like 2000 ft rather than 5000 ft in the CRJ. While you're bringing up the flaps and bugging more speeds, now you've got to change the mode on the FCP and the altitude preselect. If you have it set to a higher altitude, you can just dial it down to what you need then continue with normal procedures instead of playing "Kung Fu Pilot."

Unless we're shooting an approach in IMC I tend to set the preselect to the outbound altitude. I've only had to go around/go missed twice at a large hub, but both times we were given specific headings and altitudes to climb to.
