Default Oh fantastic.

So I've been debating using the "Rosetta Stone" software to brush up on my French skills which have gone quite rusty.

There's an online demo application where you can take a look-see at how the software works to see if you would like to subscribe/purchase the expensive package.

I'm sitting in PHX in uniform and as I was selecting the various languages to have a look-see at what options are available, the "Pashtu" screen pops up and it starts speaking Pashtu and there is a bunch of Arabic-looking writing on the screen.

Now about six people are glaring at me funny. Just thought I'd share. Oh joy.

I'm sorry bro, all I heard was 'durka durka'!

There are some Arab instructors at an FBO down the field and they were talking in Arabic to each other on the CTAF the other day - somebody keyed up the mic and gave them a few "Durka durka's." I get the impression they didn't get the joke.

Doug, my father in laws girlfriend works for them and my wife did the Spanish course. She said it was very good.

If you get it, let me know what you think. I've been considering it for my french as well. I guess we get a killer airline discount. Especially on the Arabic tapes.

Damn, I'm funny.

I like the Rosetta stone software. I think it is probably the best language learning software out there. That being said, I think there is probably no stand alone program out there for learning a language, so I wouldn't use ONLY the Rosetta stone software if you are trying to learn a new language.
If you are trying to brush up your skills, however, it's probably a very good tool. You might find it a little easy, though, depending on how out of practice you are.
The other problem that I find with the software is that in some of the exercises you only need to understand a few words in the sentence that they provide you to get the right answer on the exercise. For example, they might provide you a sentence like, "That lady over there is wearing a blue hat" and pictures of a man on a table, a girl drinking milk, a lady wearing a blue hat, and a horse. If the only words you understood were "blue" or "hat" you would be able to get the right answer. So you sort of have to do your own work to ensure that you understand the WHOLE sentence. In all, though, it's a good product, but not the end all be all.

Sorry to change pace, but I've always liked Pimsleur. All audio, so there's no reading/writing skills, but it sure got me fluent in speaking French in no time! On the way to the airport, during every XC to San Diego, and on the way home from the airport. I'm crap now, but it was great!

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing the Spanish course after seeing that ad on the back of "Sky Mall" for so long. I could possibly have a hard time communicating and conducting business in the future without Spanish fluency; especially in Socal.

I tried Pimsler for Spanish, but it didn't do me any good. Without reading and writing, knowledge of a language doesn't last.
