Default Shoes????

I should be flying the line in a week or so, and the new shoes i purchased recently must have a good amount of metal in them, because they set the metal detector off when i went home during training. Anybody know where do find shoes that do not have any metal in them.

thanks

I bought a nie looking pair of Dockers(I think) at Kohl's that I wore while flying - it was NICE not having to take them off. Just look for the "Airport Friendly" tag - most shoes that don't have metal in them have a similar tag on them or the box.

www.drmartens.com no metal if you go with the non-steel toe shoes. Very nice shoe and will last until your 60

I can no longer back the Dr. Martens... which sucks. I used to love DM's, but recently they started farming out production to China. The quality has definately suffered in my opinion.

I bought some of the Deer Stags that Crew Outfitters was selling at the AA training bldg for around $50. You can get them a little cheaper at JC Penny's though.

Like Jason said, look for the airport friendly tag.

Don't they let you wear flip-flops on the rock anyway?

Keep in mind that even if you get airport friendly shoes chances are they will have to come off when ever you are not in uniform. Varies from station to station, but for the most part if it's got more then a 3/4 inch sole it has to come off.

Ecco shoes are the best. Never had to take them off out of uniform either.

Deer Stags: $35 at Burlington Coat Factory.

The removal criteria seems to vary from airport to airport and screener to screener. Every airport seemes to have their thing that they enforce for some it is 1 carry on and a personal item...NOT 2 carry-ons. For some it is sweatshirts and jackets, and for some (including my home airport) it is shoes.

Even I with a SIDA badge was told to take my shoes off while on the clock......

This was the same person thet would not let a commuter through with only a J/S form....He needed a boarding pass...He was in uniform as well.

I kindly told them where they could shove it.

Ditto on the Deer Stags. Cheap, bulletproof, shine up well, don't beep. Jimmy like.

I got a pair of Skechers at Rack Room for about $50. Airport friendly and less than an inch on the sole. That being said, I'm pretty sure TSA will flex their muscles and make me take 'em off anyway......

Kenneth Cole Reaction slip-on shoes. Yes, they have metal, but who cares. They are awesome shoes, really stylish, and easy to get on and off. Plus, they don't look uber dorky if you wear them out on the overnight.

You have to love TSA. They never know their directives. I have had similar problems with no continuity between stations. Twice I have had to get a supervisor to let me through w/o a boarding pass when J/S. According to the last Directive I read shoes didn't have to come off.

TSA is just as screwed up as US Customes when it comes to knowing policies. If a pilot had their level of knowledge on policies and procedures he/she would be fired in a second.

Here's another vote for Ecco's. A little pricy, but damn comfortable, last forever, look sharp, and are airport friendly.

Yeah, but the TSA isn't there to be any real security barrier anyway. Their policies and procedures pretty much paint them as a "feel good" storefront panacea for all the "won't someone think of the poor innocent children" martinet kneejerks out there. Political move, and cheap as possible.
C'mon, do you really think that the skinny kid with the L.A. sag and TSA epaulets, the sweet old grandma, or the grossly obese school security guard is the last line of defense against us and a muti-national fanatic terrortist organization? God I hope not. We know they're a joke, they know thier a joke, and the terrorists sure as hell know they're a joke.
But when your career options are flipping burgers, greeting people at Wall-Mart, or watching Springer as you fart into your barcalounger, bossing people around at the airport and getting a goverment check starts to look pretty good. And hey! All the free cigarette lighters and nose hair sicsors you can carry!

Thing is they start at 13.50 / hour (in BGR, low cost of living area), so with the money they get an ego 'cause they are important 'cause they are getting paid well. To put it into perspective I started as a ramper at 8.75 / hour. I wil have to have worked for 8 years to make the same that a TSA screener makes in his first year. Some of the guys are great over there, but there are a lot of bad apples, hell the tree is rotting and a few managed to escape.

That's more than some instructors. Do they still not require a high school degree?

I cannot back Kenneth Cole shoes. Mine fell apart entirely too quickly for what I paid, and they were not subjected to the rigors of regular airline wear. I currently wear Rockports which I found with an airport friendly tag. Less than $100 at Shoe Pavilion, and comfy. Whatever you do, don't get leather soles. You'll slip on deice fluid, and it will eat right through the leather.

I use the skechers Harvard shoe. Its a nice plain black shoe and it's airport friendly. I got mine at Kohls. They market it as a work shoe, not a dress shoe, but it looks just the same, and it is super comfortable....like wearing sneakers. They have a non-slip sole and only cost about $40 bucks. I never ever take them off through security and have never had a problem.
