I personally would not. I'll certainly support them if they choose this career (which I doubt they will), but I'm not going to promote it.

My kid is due in April, and he's getting tons of airplane stuff. That being said, if he chooses to follow in my hopeful footsteps, I'll support him 110%. If he chooses NOT to, I'll support him just as much in whatever he decides to do (unless it's live at home with no job till his 30 ). I don't think I'll push him towards an aviation career, though. If it happens, cool. If it doesn't, cool.

I'd recommend aviation, without a doubt. No hesitation at all. I've gotten so much satisfaction from flying airplanes, that I've managed to see through all of the roses and through all of the complaining. I'm a broke-a$$ CFI, and I'm still having a ball.

I have a qualified "yes" to this question. I would recommend it. However, you can't be in this business for the money or the glory. You have to LOVE aviation ... you have to have a passion for it, because that passion is all that will sustain you through the piles and piles of inevitable crap that come down the road in the industry. If you love it, it's worth it. If not, then you'll be miserable in this business your entire life. Consider just some of the highlights of my last few weeks: Worked all of Thanksgiving weekend (Wednesday through Sunday), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day. Took a three-hour delay because the airplane was literally FROZEN TO THE TARMAC in CMH after an ice storm. Almost got diverted on my commute thanks to freezing rain. Flew in/out of BOS during a Nor'easter. Had 155 knot headwinds. 14 degrees in snow and ice on my BNA layover. Snow flurries in Pensacola. Rerouted and extended twice by crew scheduling on my last two trips. More de-icing delays than I can count. And the funny thing is ... in talking to my co-workers, I had one of the smoothest holiday experiences in the company! RSB |

I was talking to a United CA a few days ago about this. Both of us, at this point in time, will not encourage anyone to get into aviation as a career. Hobby? Heck yeah, that's really where the fun is.
